USB Not Recognizing Gaming Devices Only?!?!?

Hi guys, my friend recommended me to this site. I'm stumped

Here goes:
I recently got a new mobo/cpu combo from my friend and built it w/ all new hardware. It booted up fine. I've updated fully, and I notice that my game controller, and steering wheel just get a "USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED" problem saying one of the usb devices have malfunctioned. Since this I have updated software drivers/system bios (bios has usb enabled 2.0) and even bought a pci USB hub that didn't work as well. HERES THE KICKER: My camcorder/ Camera and other stuff all work fine through the same USB ports!!!!!

I built this specifically to play Test Drive Unlimited and now I can only use the keyboard.

Please help I have been searching the internet all day to no avail!
 
Which device(s) failed? Have you tried more than one steering wheel or other gaming device?

Try searching Google for [your motherboard model] + USB + problem.
 
Thanks for the reply... I did try my Logitech Momo steering wheel, and my century concepts usb gamepad, which worked fine on my other mobo.. The Usb ports still recognize the camera's and such though. In fact I do believe that the intial boot of this computer recognized the controller.. But I messed up the windows install and had to reformat again.

I'll try searching... Should I post my info? I forget how to do that though.
 
You could post your results, but since your USB controllers work with another board, I don't know if it would help.

Have you checked Device Manager with any of the USB controllers plugged in? If so, did you see a big yellow question mark? If so, you can try to fix the problem from there, or you can delete the device and let Windows find it again when it reboots.

You could also re-installing the USB drivers for your board. The easy way would be to try doing it either by running the setup disk that came with your board or by downloading the latest version from the manufacturer's website. In either case, if the system asks you if you want to overwrite a current file by that name, answer, "Yes."

I should of mentioned that I tried the disconnecting of all usb, safe mode, uninstall root hubs then host controller already, then shutdown. They reinstalled on normal startup again and that didn't work. All the devices appear fine in device manager; however, there there are unknown devices in place of my controller/wheel when plugged in.


I am running XP Sp2 (the 2.0 drivers should of been on the SP1 install cd). p4 3.0 ghz Asus p4p800-E deluxe mobo, serial ata master drive, ide junk drive.

I just hope I don't have to reformatt again

I searched Google for Asus "P4P800-E Deluxe" USB problem and found a number of entries that suggest there may be problems with this board. You'll have to chase them down to see if any of them relate to your problem.

I asked if you found big yellow question marks in Device Manager when the controllers are plugged in. If so, what are the messages with them?
 
Yea... the only problem is nobody carries them anymore and it would be ludacris to spend 275$ for a refurb. (I don't want to buy another whole setup)

There is no yellow exlamation. It just states Unknown device under the host controllers when they are plugged in.
 
What happens when you click on it? Can you check to see what interrupts it's using? If so, does it show any conflicts?

Does it give you the options to search for the driver or re-install it?

Do you have the latest BIOS? Have you tried clearing the CMOS and resetting it for your preferences?

If re-installing the latest USB drivers doesn't do it, it's beginning to sound like your board is incompatible or there's some problem unique to your motherboard.
 
Nothing happens when I click on it in device manager, I mean I can get into properties and search for the driver, but it will not find anything. I even installed the supplied drivers from the Gamepad install disk, and when I go to manually install the driver I can't because the install disk is an .exe file. I cannot find what interrupts its using.

I'll try looking for an updated version of the Bios, and I have not tried clearing yet.

I cannot find usb drivers. I've looked for them but I cannot find them.

Go back again without the controllers connected, and check under "Resources" for IRQ conflicts.

USB drivers are built into XP.

The only other thing I can think of is to check all of your BIOS settings.

Tryed reformating again.. Still have the problem... I think the mobo is screwed... Now i'm going to have to get a whole new mobo/cpu combo just to use a game controller.... what a pain.

I wonder if there is anything to convert gameport socket to a usb socket. Then all i would have to do is get the gameport device that came w/ the motherboard.??

 
I your board is less than three years old, Asus' warranty policy may help you:

All ASUS motherboard purchased after November 1st, 1999 will carry 3 year limited warranty services. One year limited warranty is given to purchase made prior to this date.

Found out the problem.... Apparently both my game controller AND my wheel have been damaged. I tried them on a friends computer and got the same message.

When I had hooked up the dashboard on my computer the front usb ports where the only things that were to be installed with the writing not facing up, I installed it facing up, and for some reason it fried anything I put in that slot until the problem was ramified.

Thanks for the advice and help, though Harvey. I'm just glad I don't have a defective mobo.
