hi, i just built a new rig (first build) and when i try to plug in my wifi usb adapter it says "the device is not recognized" and then says that it can't install the drivershttp://www.tomshardware.com/forum/322019-31-wifi-adapters-recognized# or something to that extent. i've manually installed the correct drivers but when i go to device manager it still has an exclamation mark and says that the device has a problem. i've tried the adapter on another computer and it works fine, i've also got a 2nd adapter i tried to run on my new build and the exact same thing happens. i've shut off legacy usb in the mobo because i read that might help, i also disabled all power saving on the usb ports. is there a step i might have missed while installing the motherboard? a cable i might have missed or something? the internet works fine when i plug in an ethernet cable so i'm not really sure. i've tried removing and re installing drivers and it still won't work. the wifi adapter was working fine on my old setup, but i took the hard drives from my old computer and installed them in the new rig but everything else is new. my setup is
i2500k cpu
asrock p67 mobo
8gb ripjaws ram
earthwatts 650 psu
his 6950 video card

anyone have any ideas because this is driving me crazy. should i reformat windows? thanks

(sorry bout underlining of words etc i copy/pasted from other places i posted)

You shouldn't need a driver for your onboard USB ports. Windows does that natively since XP. Have you searched Google for the combination of your motherboard and your wifi adapter models? That my find other reports from others of similar problems, as well as possible solutions.

Good luck. :)

Did you install all the drivers from the motherboard's CD? You may need the appropriate chipset drivers...

While the OS might install them for you...sometimes you need the ones that come with the board.

i installed the drivers that came on the cd but i'm not sure if i have to download different drivers for the chipset or anything. i dont have a flash drive with me to boot into usb. my mp3 player is recognized and works fine.. i think my internet drivers may be corrupt or something i have no idea!

Are you using the correct 32 or 64-bit drivers? With the device plugged in, can you "add new hardware" and choose the correct device from the list Windows gives you?

Did you try all the different ports? i.e. if you've been trying on the front case ports, did you try using the rear USB ports, or vice-versa?

i tried the rear and front ports, interesting to note that the usb 3.0 ports on my motherboard recognized that it was a wlan 2.0 usb adapter but it still had the exclamation mark and said "error code 10" which apparently means the device cannot start. but any time i plugged it in a usb 2.0 port it says device not recognized. keep in mind all correct drivers are installed and i've tried 2 different usb adapters, both confirmed to work

is there any way i could have plugged in the usb cables into the motherboard wrong? but that wouldnt make sense right because i was plugging it directly into the mobo usb slots also and had the same result

ok i took out the cmos battery, reset the cmos, reseated the ram and video card and left the power cable out and pc off for an hour and its still doing this.. i read it has something to do with static on the motherboard but that doesn't even make sense?!

You can build up a static charge in your body that could have damaged the motherboard. It's the same thing that causes a spark to jump between your fingertip and a doorknob. This is most likely to happen on a dry, windy day or when the atmosphere is heavily charged, such as during and in the time surrounding a lightning storm.

A static discharge could happen if you don't discharge any static build up in your body by touching the grounded chassis before reaching into touch your motherboard or connected peripheral. If that happened, it could damage any given function on your board or turn the whole thing into a dark emiiting device.

I know. I killed my first motherboard that way a lot of years ago.

I'm not sure this is the same thing but about six months ago I had a USB port that gave off the same message (USB port not recognized). It wasn't affecting anything so I ignored it and unplugged whatever I had plugged in that port. After a week or so I plugged the external disk back in and didn't see the message again. A few months later my motherboard died. I don't know if there's a connection but coincidences give me the shivers. Just be sure your backups are up to date.
