USB not powered up....

hi guys......

I've been having problems with my desktop.....
E8400 with P5E-VM HDMI... nVidia 8800GT....
now... i'm suspecting this might b a XP problem....
whenever I start-up the computer... my mouse&keyboard's light are still on...
when it begins to load windows, right after the "WINDOW XP loading" logo appears, then I see no light for the mouse and USB.....
therefore, I'm stuck on this log-on screen.....

i've used the keyboard perfectly in BIOS...and the settings seems fine...

anyone experienced this before?? and found any solution??
is this a software/virus problem or hardware problem??
cuz I tried pulling out the ram and batteris on the mobo....
but it's still like this.....

oh yeah....right before this happened....I used my external HD on the USB....
could it b my external HD has some virus or sth??
this happened a couple of times when i connect the external HD, my USB only became partial disabled....and then when i restart the computer it was all fine again....
right now no matter how many times I restart, it just doesn't work....

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

reistall your motherboard drivers. Chances are the USB drivers have gotten currupted. The motherboard itself has its own built in drivers for USB for use in the bios. But when XP loads the OS takes over and has to load its own drivers to get the USB ports to work.

If your USB is temporarily out to lunch, why not try a ps2 connected keyboard and mouse? If you do have any handy, you should be able to borrow a set, or just buy a cheap cheap ps2 connected set.

And then once your USB drivers are reinstalled, you are good to go. Just remember, you can hot swap usb devices, but not ps2 devices.

Correct about PS2-USB adapters. Another very easy fix that always makes USB more reliable is to use a powered USB hub.

could it be the motherboard's problem?

Wait a minute.... do they work in BIOS? (I mean with the PS2 adaptors)
