Hey all,

Is it normal for a USB modem (Diamond SupraMax .92 USB) to use 85%-90% of my cpu? I know it's my modem because I can have nothing running and I'm at 0%-2% and when I connect to the internet, it shoots up and cripples the rest of my computer. I'm running XP Professional right now, but it did the same thing under 2000 Professional, so that eliminates the operating system.

I guess what I'm asking is ... since I bought a USB modem, am I stuck with this situation?

Oh, BTW, here is my stats....

Duron 750
Abit KT7A
384MB PC133 Crucial
30GB 7200RPM Maxtor
Gainward GF3 VIVO Powerpack
Windows XP Professional with all updates as of yesterday....

Thanks ahead guys....
I appreciate the help.

That is an extremely odd situation! I have only heard excellent things of USB modems. I have a PCI modem, it lags when you connect and disconnect, but other than that, no noticable effects. I'd still much prefer having a hardware modem - but by the sounds of it, USB modems aren't all that they're cracked up to be! Unless you have a problem of some sort. Resource conflicts... is it possible with that modem? Drivers..?? I don't know much about it, sorry.

My dumb butt bought a Diamond modem, I should've known better. My instincts point to lousy driver writing, because I used to own a Diamond Viper II video card and their drivers for it were AWEFUL. Why did I buy another Diamond product?

BUT, maybe I'm missing something.... anybody?

Diamond was very good back in the day of Voodoo 1. Then they were bought out by S3 and turned into crap.

Maybe it's not your modem's fault. Try other usb devices. I have a pc with Gigabyte 7VTX-E mobo and in WinXP even my mouse takes 50% of cpu. There are no problems in WinME.
Could there be a problem with WinXp?
