USB mass storage devices hanging

Whenever I connect a USB mass storage device (such as my digital camera or my USB flash pen drive) the computer recognizes the new hardware and apparently loads the proper drivers. However, when I try to access this device through windows explorer, explorer hangs. If I try to update the drivers in device manager, device manager hangs. Basically it seems that any program that tries to access these devices hangs indefinitely and never comes back.

I'm running Windows XP Home with all current critical updates. My USB controller is built in on my Abit NF7-S mobo, and I have updated my mobo drivers and even flashed my BIOS. nothing seems to work. Anybody have any ideas?

Have you checked the EVENT LOG to see what specific driver is hanging?

Did you update to Service Pack 1 (it includes USB 2.0 support drivers)?

There are two associated errors in the event logs. In the System logs, I get "Timed out sending notification of target device change to window of "C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE"
" Which is attributed to PlugPlayManager.

In the Application log, I get "WinMgmt could not initialize the core parts. This could be due to a badly installed version of WinMgmt, WinMgmt repository upgrade failure, insufficient disk space or insufficient memory." I have plenty of disk space and plenty of memory.

In the Application log, I also get the warning "WMI ADAP was unable to process the performance libraries: 0x80041001"

I've looked all of these up on the net and can't really find much help. Anybody have any ideas?

Are the USB Controllers and Hubs showing that are functioning
properly in the DEVICE MANAGER or are there ERRORs?

Everything shows up as fine. But if I try to do anything with either the USB mass storage driver or the driver for the drive that shows up (such as update it) device manager hangs.

I had this problem on my a7n8x, it appears to be an issue with nforce boards in general. I couldn't get my muvo to work. Creative labs finally released a fix for the muvo problem but I'm not sure asus ever addressed it.

Assuming its the same problem of course. My work around was to buy a refurbished usb controller off newegg for $4.50, then everything worked great
