USB malfunction, code 43

about a week ago while playing everquest 2, I got a blue screen. After rebooting I get the message:

in device manager it shows as unknown device:

and in the properties of that device it shows this:

All of the USB devices connected to my computer are working properly, which are a webcam, mouse, and keyboard. I have tried unplugging all these devices, but the unknown device does not go away.

I also tried unplugging them all and using the keyboard and mouse without the USB ports, disabling/reenabling the device, no go. I also tried uninstalling the unknown device with nothing in the USB ports, restarting, and it failed to install device drivers, and gave me the malfunction message again.

The only issue I have noticed so far is that everquest 2 stops responding and must close every couple hours immediately following this blue screen. Could that be related to this error message about the USB device?

any help would be appreciated, its rather annoying to see that message pop up every time i boot my computer, it even shows if I leave the unknown device disabled.

oh, and if it matters, specs for computer are:

dell xps435T base
core i7-920
12 gigs ram
1GB radeon 5870
1TB HD
dvd drive
dvd burner

I did a google search and what I found seems to suggest that updating the BIOS for your motherboard may take care of the problem. I also saw recommendations to clear CMOS & leave the system unplugged for a while.

the bios is actually up to date, would reapplying that update do anything? How do you clear CMOS?
 
Bordoh --- ah, didn't know you had the latest BIOS. No, I would not reapply it. You can clear CMOS by using the jumper on the motherboard, or re-seating the CMOS battery. Look at the last two options on this page (I wouldn't do the first thing listed, as I don't think that actually 'clears' anything): http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/tp/clearcmos.htm

Edit: I would load optimized defaults in BIOS after clearing CMOS, however (first option listed on the page I linked).

if done wrong, can I hurt my pc clearing the CMOS? If its just the annoyance of seeing the message I can always live with that. Could it be whats causing the issues with eq2 locking up? I assumed it might since they started at the same time, I've really got no idea though.
 
I just had this same problem using my USB cable with my Samsung Strive. I did a google search myself and restarting the computer fixed my problem.

unfortunately has not worked for mine. Its been restarted numerous times already.
 
in device manager the unknown device shows as Port_#0003.Hub_#0008 in properties.

in USBDview.. Port_#0003.Hub_#0008 is listed as:

Generic - SM/xD-Picture USB device

Device type: Mass Storage

Connected: no

if I choose the option to show devices without drivers it also shows Port_#0003.Hub_#0008 as unknown device. Listed twice, once as stated above, and once as unknown.

I'm able to delete it from the registry it seems, would that solve the problem?

well, I tried deleting it and I get a message saying error deleting key. Tried deleting it in safe mode too, still error deleting key. I only have an administrator account and it has full access permissions in regedit.

Be sure to do a registry backup first using
regedit - File - Export

from within regedit - right click the entry and select permissions
then select Advanced
select Effective Permissions tab
and see what it says for Administrators Group

it's probably set for "Read Control"
and may need to enable "delete" for your account -somehow

ok.. I set myself permissions to delete it... was setup kindof odd. I was able to delete everything but the default key, that error'd on deleting. and after rebooting.. got the error again and all the registry entries I deleted came right back... bah !
 
lol - it's cursed

Could always try a 2nd install of Windows (shrink down the current partition to make room) and see if the same mysterious device shows up.
 
I may just give up.. doesn't seem to be causing any problems really.. the eq2 locking up thing actually stopped, was due to some recent patch and they fixed it.

Guess I'll just click ok when it says malfunction ..

Well, the error was starting to annoy me and I didn't have much installed anyway so I just went and completely formatted 'n reinstalled windows.

However, that didn't fix the error. It still appears nothing is malfunctioning, all my USB devices still work just fine.

If reformatting didn't fix it does that mean something is physically wrong and I just haven't noticed it?
 
ya.. I've got some on the front of the computer.. SD card slots 'n such you mean right? but I've never used them before

oh, seems as though I do have one labelled SM XD

so why would it be malfunctioning if I've never used it?

Trace the USB cable(s) going from the memory reader and temporarily disconnect them from the USB pins on the motherboard. See if the errors go away.

If the Card Reader also has front USB ports, the USB ports likely use a second USB cable. You may be able to leave the second USB cable attached to the motherboard and just leave the Card Reader disconnected (if you want the errors to go away).

thanks for all the help everyone. It turns out the idea in the top link here about cutting power completely for a couple minutes and then starting up again did the trick. the error went away and the uknown device is now called realtek usb 2.0 card reader. Now I feel dumb for formatting, but it kinda needed it anyway.

So problem solved, THANK YOU !
 
i was thinkin that too. but I figured, meh.. he said it worked for him... simplest option I had.. I was kinda suprized, but happy too
