Hello everyone, I built a new computer just a week ago since it was about time to upgrade from my old rig and as I had decided that, the pci-e slot on the motherboard decided to go corrupt. The old rig had AMD 3700+ San Diego, DFI Lanparty (forgot the model), eVGA 7600gt.
Well today I face a new problem, one that I haven't been able to resolve yet.
All the important parts of the machine are the E8400 Wolfdale, DFI Lanpart DK T2R, 4x2GB Abit DDR2 800, and 2x Visiontek HD 4850's from Bestbuy during the 25% discount.
I have run through a couple trial and errors, but I have yet to find out the source of my problem. I put this topic here, because it's mostly related to either OS, or my USB devices.
Firstly, everything was put together and XP 64 SP 1 was installed... After this I thought I'd have some fun with the e8400 and started to overclock a bit. It was orthos stable for several minutes, so I decided it was good and I went off on my merry way to download goodies like firefox, my instant messenger, and install the motherboard drivers.
After I installed the chipset drivers from the cd it came with, it prompted me to restart. I told it to later, then I go to surfing the web a bit. Apparently, that couple minutes of orthos wasn't enough. My computer froze and I was thinking, "darn, this might cause chipset driver issues?" I restart the computer, and my USB mouse fails to recognize, although it's being powered.
I'm now thinking that it's because of the chipset driver installation, having my computer freeze may have not been ideal for it. I plugged several different USB mice, but to no avail. They will all power up, LED's on, but the devices just will not recognize. I go to find an old PS2 mouse, and that works after a restart. I'm playing around with plugging into different USB ports, all the ones on the back, and the ones on the front of my case that I plugged in, and know work since I had used them. None of them recognize my mouse, although they power it. Now I'm thinking I should set clock speeds back to stock and reinstall XP 64 sp1.
I set my clock speeds back to normal and go through reinstalling XP. I know my USB mouse still works because at some point during the XP installation it reboots and you get to wave your mouse around while everything installs. (The part where it always says ETA 39 minutes)
Now I'm thinking, oh yay... I'm in the clear, my usb is working and XP is on my computer again. I now go and download the latest revision of chipset drivers off the DFI site (which are newer than the CD drivers) and I install, then restart. Once XP loads again, my hopes went from high, back down to an all time low. my USB wasn't working again!! Once again, my mouse is powered, but not recognized and therefore, not working. I could bug a friend for a USB to PS2 adapter, but I want to resolve this issue, as using USB for more than just a mouse is quite useful...
I install XP 64 for the third time now (which is the current installation that I am running now) and I have all drivers and goodies downloaded for my computer, except for the chipset drivers. I'm using my computer 24/7 for all the things I normally do, surfing the web, playing games, listening to music, and all drivers for my parts are installed, with the exception of the chipset drivers. When comparing computer specs and performance in something like Crysis I've seen others people are getting higher frame rates than I am with similar or slightly worse spesc, and even in higher resolutions... so I'm thinking it's possibly because I don't have the chipset drivers installed. I built the computer knowing X38's chipset with the Core2Duo and Crossfire work well together
(I'm not sure what type of penalties I incur for not having the drivers and would like to know. It just sounds like a bad idea running the hardware without proper drivers.)
I've been researching for days, and I can't find very much information. From my findings, there are no USB failure issues related to chipset driver installation for this motherboard [DFI LP DK T2R]. Although, I have found that it may be an XP service pack 1 issue.
Microsoft says, in article 314634 from Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314634) "Windows XP does not detect your new USB device"
Even though it says that, I fail to understand why USB failure occurs after the installation of chipset drivers?
Well, I've put as much thought into solving my problem as I can, and a lot of time writing up my (software/peripheral?) issue
Mods feel free to move this where you think it is appropriate, if this subcategory doesn't match.
Cliff Notes below

For all those who don't want to read all that
I installed the chipset drivers and it causes my USB to fail to recognize any device. I can't resolve issue with reinstallation of XP and the latest chipset drivers. USB peripherals receive power, but do not function. I want to make my chipset drivers work without disabling all my USB ports.
- and I'd also like to know what penalties I would take not having chipset drivers installed?
The chipset is X38 if this matters at all.
edit: I also forgot to include that I did some troubleshooting in safe mode, and even though drivers aren't loaded... my USB still fails to work!
and with the edit, I think this should be in the motherboard section if not this one
Thanks everyone,
William L.
