USB Issue

I, like many here I'd suppose, use a wireless adapter to connect to my router. I have 3 adapters, 2 Linksys and a Belkin, that I've tried. My problem is that I cant have both a WNIC and and ext-HDD plugged in at the same time. Whichever is plugged in first works. Whichever is plugged in second, doesn't. I have 2 different external drives, a seagate 3.5" and a WD 2.5". I've tried changing out adapters and drives - No Dice. Anyone run into this before?
