it just freezes at random times on my brother's computer

it just started doing thing

none of the buttons work either

suspend and all the other power saving stuff is turned off

the only thing that gets it back is unplugging and replugging it back in to the USB port , same one or a different one it doesnt matter

it will freeze again and I have to repeat though

the infrared light is still on and gets brighter if you move it though

I had the same problem with the same mouse - cable was broken at the point it exits the mouse.
Move cable a little - contact restores.
I opened it, cut off piece of cable with connector and resoldered it.
Worked few more months - got bad again.
I got replacement from MS.

i tried jiggling the cable and it did not fix the problem

the only thing that does is unplugging it from the USB port and plugging it back in

These mice are notoriously unreliable and thats why MS recently extended its warranty period to offer replacements for any that have gone bad. I have returned 2 already (I received the replacements in 3 weeks.)

If reinstalling the intellipoint software doesn't help and nothing else appears to be problematic, its most likely this mouse.

/edit...i'd check to make sure there isn't an irq conflict with another device too.

I have two intellimouse Explorer mice and I have just started getting the exact same problem. Disconnecting it and plugging it back into the USB slot cures the problem. Anyway I connected my other mouse and have not had the problem repeat. It looks like its the mouse as opposed to the OS. I too am running WinXP.
