Will a USB hub run on the surface pro?
IE; run a mouse and a flash drive at the same time.

It's a full sized USB. so yes. The only thing that may not run through a USB Hub might be a 2.5" HDD with other accessories

Depends on the HDD. SSD ones would definitely work alongside a receiver for a peripheral. I have yet to try all three - the wireless trackball, a G930 transmitter, and a external USB conventional powered hard drive (SSD ones would fare better). But that alone would be taxing to experience slowdown on the hard drive in reliability.

Does it need to be a powered hub?

No, not at all.

See picture. Both the headset transmitter, unifying receiver, and drive (there is an SSD in it instead) works.
