Hey Guys,

I recently built a new system, but I'm having problems getting my front USB ports to work correctly. It seems that every way I try to connect the ports to the USB header on the motherboard will not work.

Hardware:
- Antec SX630II Case
- Abit NF7 Motherboard

Here are the connectors I have available with my case:
-- Available Connectors

Here is a picture I took of the USB headers. One header is currently being used by two ports that connect up to the back of the system occupying a PCI slot. Maybe by looking at how that one is wired you can get some idea as to how I need to connect up these front ports?
-- Motherboard USB Headers

And here is how Abit says to connect them:
-- USB Header Explanation (Abit Manual)

I've tried connecting my connectors this way a dozen times, and it does not work! I've tried different pin orientation, switching around ground and +5V connectors, connecting only 8 pins (instead of 9), but nothing will work!

The main problem I'm having is getting my digital camera to work with the front ports! I've been able to hook up my wacom tablet to the ports fine, but my camera is giving me grief. With all the different ways I've tried connecting up the front ports, sometimes when I plug the camera in the system will detect it and load the appropriate drivers, sometimes not. Once and awhile the camera will even show up as a mass storage device in "My Computer", but the drive is empty and I cannot put files on it. That's the furthest I've gotten. It says "Unknown filesystem" or something like that when I try to write data to it. Otherwise my camera will work great in all of my other USB ports.

I've run out of ideas! Ahhh... help!

Thanks,
Andrew

I also have an antec case with the same connectors... Solved the problem by getting the pins right. See:
Link to my USB 2.0 problem

In your case, try one port first 1-red 3-white 5-green 7-blue all in a straight line. If still having problems:

Lets say:
Fronside ports = FP and frontside headers = FH
Rear ports = RP / Rear headers = RH

Have you tried switching the plugs from FP/FH to FP/RH, to see if the fault moves. If it does move, then you would probably have a wiring/connector problem.

If you move the RP to the FH, and get the same fault, then it is probably a fault on the board itself.

Also, you can take a pic of the error, and maybe help us help you by pushing "ctrl-prnt screen" (above insert key) to take a screenshot, and then going into a picture program or word program, and pasting it, then saving it as a graphic. Then we could see exactly what you see.

Segregate your case's wiring into two groups: the ones with the numeral 1, and the ones with the numeral 2.

As you can see, you've got five plugs with the numeral 1. Those go on the row of your header which has five pins, in the order shown in ABit's picture: +5V, D-, D+, Ground, Ground. +5V is the "VCC" that ABit is referring to.

The four plugs with the numeral 2 go on the other row of pins, in the same order: +5V, D-, D+, Ground. Sorry to the other posters, if I'm repeating what you said using different wording

I always test front-USB ports with something expendable (an inexpensive USB mouse) because if you mis-wire the USB wiring, you can destroy USB-based equipment. So far, one USB mouse has given its life in the performance of this duty :Q

Yes, I've tried all of your suggestions.. no success. I've tried every possible way to wire in the front ports! Ugh!!! It seems nothing works at all. Only a USB mouse or my USB tablet seem to work with them, but my digital camera will not. I'm having the same error messages as Bacinator had, mainly "unsupported device, device malfunction, etc."

Tried that already, no luck :(

Yes, I did try that. The fault did move, it happens on both headers. I also moved the RP to the FH and the RPs still worked with the digital camera fine (and any other device, for that matter).

I don't see an option to enable all USB ports, but everything related to USB (allot IRQ to USB, and USB2.0) I have enabled. I also disabled USB 2.0 with no luck.

Yep, I tried connecting them this way too (by segregating them). I have not even got 1 port to work this way. I've mainly been trying to get these USB ports working by only wiring in 1 port to the header so I only have to deal with 4 or 5 pins instead of 9, but still no luck.

What else is there to try?!

Thanks guys,
Andrew
