Its all marketing like John said. It might make a difference if you plan on using it for a few hundred years :D I think USB will be obsolete by then.

As a former Best Buy sales asssociate, gold plated USB cables and parallel cables make a significant difference when used instead of regular cables. They enhance and keep the connection more reliable. We recommend getting the gold cables to everyone at our low low price of $30 for the parallel, and $25 for the USB!

There's a reason why I'm a former employee :) Gold however, since its already that cheap from your price quote, just looks better :) hehe

biggest hunk of marketing crap ever. MonsterCable being the WORST offender of them all about selling marketing BS to overprice cables. Ugh... belkin just had to follow along. My favorite one though was the "gold" modem cable... implying that you'd get faster internet with using a gold plated PHONE CORD??? only $39.95

Since you have heard from a sales person from Best Buy on this, I though I might add an Electrical Engineers opinion too.

From a technical point of view, Gold provides superior connection since it does not oxidize and make resistive contacts as it ages; however, all PC connections are designed in such a way that the ordinary contact resistance found in any cheep cable will work just fine.

The gold does look pretty though doesn't it?

Save your money for something that will really improve your computer like RAM or a faster processor, or a new video card, or a faster hard drive.

AIC: If you really need a USB cable, go for it, that is a great price for a USB cable.

Be glad that you're able to purchase the cable @ $6.18 instead of being ripped of @ $19.99.
