USB freezing

I recently bought a new digital cam. Fuji S3800
running Win98se on a AMD 2100+ 512mb ram, Asrock mobo.

I've run into this issue before but can't remember how I remedied it.
It seemed like somethinig simple.

I can plug the cam in and get ready to transfer pix.
As soon as I turn cam on, windows freezes.

Anyone run into this before?
If so, what's the issue?

Does it require more power than your usb can handle? are you using the front usb ports? a self powered hub perhaps?

Are you plugging into the usb ports at the back of the motherboard or the ports cabled out to the front of the case. If it is the ports cabled out to the front you may be running into a low power issue.
try the ports at the back of the board.

I've tried both front and back. I'm not plugging the cam into the hub..which is powered. I'm pretty certian it's a windows issue, as I have had this problem with my scanner, printer and gaming stick on an older machine as well as the newer one. Just can't remember how it was remedied.

Oh duh...I should have mentioned...

If I reboot the machine with the camera on and ready to go, it works fine. Just can't do it with windows running.

i had some wierd usb-related issues which i resolved by disabling the "power management" feature in properties of the usb hubs in device manager

i suspect this might fix your problems too

that feature is disabled.

In the device manager, I continue to get the camera in 'unknown devices'.

At one point, I had about 6 of them in there.

I deleted everything and reinstalled but to no avail.

sorry mate, no more bright ideas. with what you describe about working if plugged in at bootup it does sound like a power issue though
