USB FDD options

There's a bit of discussion on the hot deal threads re: USB FDD.
I have more of a question than a hot deal, so I thought it more appropriate here.

Can you just use a card reader/CF combo as your bootable? Whenever I have my Sandisk reader plugged it, my K7S5A mobo offer USB FDD boot up.

I assume this would work then. Wouldn't it be cheaper then if you have it? Fry's (when I used to live in the Bay Area a few months ago) regularly had Sandisk 128M CF for under $50 - I actually got 160M for $45), so that's as good a deal, or better than what's been posted, since you have a dual purpose item now, right?

Can anyone tell me if it's USB 2.0? I just assumed it is, but I have no idea.

Comments?

I'd like to know about the bootability of USB CF readers in general. Such a device would be great for a crack rack for DC projects - just build a minimal Linux installation on a 64MB CF card (exceptionally cheap these days), and it would be great. 😀

Anybody tried this before? Know of any success / failure stories, or websites about booting from CF cards?
