USB extender cable for a Guitar Hero II guitar

The cable for my guitar was just too short so I decided to add an extender cable. No idea if it's a 2.0 cable or 1.1. Anyway, I've noticed a ridiculous amount of missed notes when I can keep time very well. I know, never blame sucking at the game when you can blame it on technology. 🙂 But is it possible the cable could be the problem? What's the longest USB cable I can get away with? With the wire and the guitar, the overall length is 19-20 feet.
