This is my first post....take it easy on me.....I was looking at the clearance table at OD and found they are clearing out the Linksys USB ethernet adapters for 14.44.... Wally World still has these for 49.99 and CompUSA for 39.99. I picked up 3 for myself and the Warplink Wireless network kit (last one) and the last CyberGenie phone they had...woo hoo!:) Sorry no sku! Will post when I get home.....

Not all stores have the same items unfortunately. The OD's around here only have crappy Compaq monitors and HP all-in-one printers on their clearence tables (for a whopping $30 off!)

Welcome Zwingle and congrat to your find.
Could you please tell us which OD you cleaned up?
So we don't waste out and the OD's CSR time.
Thank you.

Those Linksys USB adapters work great for cable modems. Save a pci slot and an irq. It was on clearance a few weeks ago for 19.98.

Nice find, great for hooking up a friend's computer to your network without opening their box.

I guess I lucked out. When the tech installed my Cable modem last week, he gave me a SMC EZ USB 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter free!

USB ethernet is cool, but realize a 10Mb/s rated USB adapter's throughput is more like 2-3Mb/s.

This is based on some review I read months ago...sorry I don't have URL...

But for folk like my dad who are deathly afraid of opening up a computer, this is very nice.

actually, it can be a 100, with 10Mb/s throughput. nice if you only have a 100Mb/s hub to hook up to.

My Bad! USB 1.1 spec is max 12Mb/s. Intel and the Industry leaders are currently working on the USB 2.0 specification, which has a target speed of 480 Mb/sec. 40X faster than 1.1....this could be why they are clearing these out.....Target date for 2.0 was 3Q 2000, pushed back a year....maybe by the end of 2001. Thanks fuzzy bee....but it could still be just a 10Mb/s currently.

What I'm wondering is whether the clearance price is in the computer for all OD stores - whether or not the item is actually marked down or is on a clearance table of some sort.

If this is the case, the forum rules: it would give me enormous :D satisfaction to be able to walk into OD, pick up an item priced at say $99.99 and take it up to the cashier and have it ring up at say $29.99 because I'd heard about the clearance price on AnandTech.

The most USB can handle is 12Mb/s, which should not be confused with MB/s like they rate HD's at. 12Mb/s equals 1.5MB/s. For comparison, a PC's regular ECP/EPP parallel port can handle twice the data of USB, or about 3MB/s.

I think the clearance prices are national....I could be wrong...but a majority of the posts here show that most if not all have the same clearance deals....some stores are just better at clearing\moving merchandise than others. The store may have the merchandise and not know (or care) to mark it properly and move it to a clearance area. It is worth a shot to bring it to the register and have them do a price check to verify before checking out. I saw the USB adapters at all 3 of the OD stores I shop...all on clearance tables. I do check the shelves also if I heard of a deal here but can't find it in the store....like the CyberGenie phone, had to ask...they have a secure room for stuff like that. Manager on duty seemed surprised by the price. Said he would have bought it himself if he had known. Miscommunication? Lack of communication? Who knows.

From techtv.com

A USB cable consists of four wires. Two are for data, one is for power, and one is a grounding wire. Data speeds are of two types. Low speed devices run at about 1.5 megabits per second, and high speed devices can run at 12Mb per second. Power levels in the USB chain reach 500 milliAmps, the rated power needed by non-self powered USB devices.

The clearance prices are generally in the computer. However, each store has control over additional discounts.

I have been in a few stores lately, for example, that have the ATI AIW 128 PCI (16MB) for $169.00 on the shelf. From experience it rings up @ 99.88. Generally the stores that put the items out on clearance tables are NOT the ones to go to, because they never have any deals. My best luck has come from going to stores that are slow in marking down the national prices and just asking for the product.

FYI, there are some new coupon codes around for office depot. ($20 off 100). Check out Other Places to learn more.

Has anyone in Portland, Oregon found these for this price? I had my wife stop and get one, and they were $19.99, the same price they have been for a while...

Thanks,
Rob

Bought 2 but rang up on the register for $19.88 each. It wasn't on the clearance table but on the self priced at $39.99.
I was going to post the sku but now I can't find my receipt. Sorry.
