USB DSL modem wipes out network?

Hey all,
I'm having a strange problem. Currently I have two win98 SE machines hooked up through a network. All is ok this way running both TCP/IP or Netbui. But when I hook up my USB Speedstream 4060 DSL modem, it wipes out the network. With the modem, it installs as a network adapter. After installing it, my PC's can no longer see each other. They can see themselves ok but can't ping one from the other. I have reinstalled TCP/IP, Netbui, all NIC drivers.
It all boils down to...works fine without DSL modem hooked up...dies if it is hooked up. Is the machine with the dsl modem somehow trying to use the modem as the "main" NIC, so it's not going out to th eother machine?

Any ideas?

Two things to check: DSL NIC-modem tcp/ip configuration; LAN NIC resource conflict with USB bus.

obenton,
TCP/IP settings for both NICs and Modem are: Obtain IP automatically
Use DHCP WINS resolution
Not gateways installed
Disable DNS

Should I have the NIC bound to an ATM device? Currently set to no.

No conflicts with USB bus and NIC

Nailbunny,
First things first, you need to post your protocol stack information. I believe on WIN98SE, you can do a ipconfig /all at the command prompt. If you cannot issue that command at the command prompt, then issue this command; winipcfg, post the information that the commands retrieve and we cna go from there. For now what it sounds like is when you install the DSL modem, a default route was inserted into the routing table and that's how it should work. Post that information and we cna continue from there.
Also check to make sure that the tcp/ip protocol stack was initialized properly. TO to this, issue this command at thhe command prompt: ping localhost

I dunno if this is it but i fixed a network for a guy with a similar problem. I found that after removing the netbui protocal the computers could see each other just fine. you may waNt to try that and if that is not the problem it's pretty easy to put it right back on there.
