I have a Alcatel USB ADSL modem that's plugged in to the back of my PC at home. I want to set up a wireless LAN at home. I'm trying to get the set-up visualised in my head properly before I buy a WAP. How does it work?

My USB modem is plugged in to my PC and the other end to the phone line. I buy a WAP. So now I plug the USB modem in to the USB port of the WAP and plug the WAP in to the desktop PC via ethernet? the WAP has a phone port in it which plug in to the phone line. Correct?

Now here's my questions. Is there a product which allows my WAP to plug in to my PC via USB instead of me having to fork out money for an Ethernet card for my PC? I can't seem to find such a device.

I could save myself the hassle any buy a ADSL USB Wireless Modem, a few of which I know exist, but that's like reinventing the wheel. I already have an ADSL modem.

Too bad you don't have an ethernet modem, it would make your life simpler. You could then get a router + WAP or wireless router. In the long run, it might be worth your while to buy an ethernet modem, as you can get a better setup with one. Best thing I ever did was returning my usb modem for an ethernet one while I still could, even though I wasn't clear on the advantages at that time.

See the AN networking FAQs, especially the ones on internet sharing and wireless networking.

Ethernet cards are cheap, probably far cheaper than the kind of thing you are asking for (assuming it exists). I'm thinking you continue to connect your modem to your pc. Then, you put a NIC in that PC, and connect your wap to it via crossover cable, and use ICS software or something similar. Or, maybe you just buy USB client cards for all your machines and connect in ad hoc mode.

But me, I'd splurge on the ethernet modem or a combo modem/router.

Most of the content of this quote is incorrect.

Read the links suggested above.

One thing important to know about the current of regular USB connections. Regular USB must be connected to a Computer's USB Jack on one side. Clients USB device are is not an independent agents, two USB clients (like a Modem, or a WAP) can not be connected one to the other.

There is only two good solutions, get a Normal Ethernet DSL Modem, or buy Vigor.

Jack, this Draytek sounds good, but any idea who sells it? I couldn't find it on MySimon. I did find some overseas sites for Draytek, but they did things like list the UK distributors. There is one for sale on Ebay.

I'm surprised more vendors don't offer such a gizmo, you would think there would be a market for it. It'd be especially good if it accepted either an eithernet or usb connection.

It is not popular in the US, since it is over priced. For what over reason (unknown to me), Draytek is not capable to compete (in Europe every thing is over priced). As a result buying regular Router, and External DSL Ethernet modem will cost the same, and yield a more flexible system.

This is the link to the US Distributor:

Vigor USB Router from Atlanta GA.
