I have an alcatel USB DSL modem, which works fine into the USB port as it is ment, but I happen to have a Netgear RT314 (i.e. ADSL IP Router with 4-port 10/100Mbps Switch) lying around.

Therefore I was thinking (as I clearly dont want to have to buy a ethernetDSL modem - when i have all thats needed):

1) is it possible to buy (or some how patch together) a USB to Ethernet connector - I have seen some but not for this purpose
2) would it 'technically' work (i.e. physically and drivers) - or am I being a bit ambitious

Any comments apprecitated....

Thanks

Im in UK and the bast**d British Telecom - think charging me $160 a month is on for an 'official' ethernet version....

I don't think you're being too ambitions at all. Half of all this "computer stuff" is just taking chances and seeing what works and what doesn't. Also, the RT314 is an excellent piece of equipment (I have one). I'm sure there are USB-->Ethernet adapters out there. Others will hook you up, I'm sure.

USB to Ethernet will not work as the USB NIC needs drivers and CPU power from your system (just like the USB DSL modem itself)

Call and bitch at your DSL provider, their is a good chance they will swap you for a ethernet model (or just start having "problems" with your current USB one)

I'd try Gunbuster's approach - pretend that you're having nothing but red-ass with the USB modem and try to get them to swap it out for you :D

USB modem turns your Router into a Switch only device (hey it still better then a Hub).

The current USB devices work only in one way. One side must be connected to a Computer. It needs the Drivers, Memory, and CPU.

You can not connect USB to Ethernet since none of them is a Computer.

Next year more sophisticated USB devices that are more independent should get to the market.

You can try to find Ethernet DSL Modem (which is close to impossible mission).

I think that this may be the sort of product that you're looking for. I'd be interested in hearing if anybody's got something like that. I use a software proxy on a file-sharing PC atm, if this product is good enough I might make the change... Anybody?

Well found!! - shame about the price

I find using 'internet connection sharing' - courtesy of microsoft - causes all sorts of problems for my server when running 24/7

This is very UK-specific, but you can get good news and tips on this sort of thing here. Their forums are bound to carry info on the Seg product line and hopefully competitors, too.
