USB Drives Not Recognized By My PC's...

one is a brand name drive (lexar) and the other a generic brand. three of our 4 pc's won't recognize either one. i presume there are drivers i can download to alleviate this, but shouldn't xp recognize these little guys?

also, will i need specific drivers or is there a generic driver for xp to recognize usb drives?

thanks!!

XP shouldn't have a problem with the drives, but your mobo might have.
Can you see any exclamation marks in Device Manager when the USB drive(s) are attached?

What mobo/hw have you got?
What chipset drivers are you using?

Go into your BIOS and make sure all parameters relating to USB are set properly.

P. S. - Then give your O/S time to install the USB drivers, once you get back up to the desktop.

You need at least the SP1 update to XP. USB drivers are in this update.

Goto Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager and right clk on something under USB Controllers>Properties>Update Drivers.

If that doesn't work, I don't have a clue.

more info: one is a lexar jumpdrive and the other a generic. the generic one will light up but is not recognized and the lexar one doesn't even light. when i tried the above, my options are 'scan for hardware changes' or 'properties'. when i try to scan for plug and play compliant hardware it freezes each and every time...any ideas how to get my machine (xp home sp1) to recognize these little buggers?

i'm happy to install drivers, where do i find them and are they universal or specific by brand?

oh, and no exclamation points in device manager. i'm stumped, there are no lexar drivers for xp...since it should know them anyway.

thanks!

further update....rebooted my pc. now it will recognize the generic flash drive (although on my computer no drive shows up) but the lexar is still not lighting up or being recognized. i'm totally stumped...
