USB Device Not Recognized-HEALED ITSELF

Bill Kunert

Senior member
Just installed the mother board and reloaded XP. I get a message on the task panel "USB device not recognized. This message flashes on and off at an irregular rate. Device manager shows an unknown usb device which comes and goes as the message is flashing on the task bar. I have 3 usb devices connected and they all show up in device manager. I have Vista RC2 on another drive and it doesn't show the behavior so it almost has to be an XP problem. Any ideas? All replies will be appreciated.

Thanks
Bill

All of the connected USB devices work perfectly. This message is for something else. There actually is no device connected and the unknown device in device manager shows no driver installed. It's some kind of phantom.

try this... unplug your computer from the wall. wait about minute go hit the power button acouple times then wait about 5 minutes. go get a snack or something. Come back hit the power button again, then plug everything back in then power it on, see if that helps

No, headers for the front usb ports aren't wired. Rmember it works great in Vista so it almost has to be a software thing.

When you're in device manager where it shows the unkown device. In the properties of it does it give any clues as to what the computer thinks it is?

Can you just disable it?

Propertie only says that there is no driver loaded for whatever it is. If I disable it another one appears. For some strange reason it seems to have gone away. I haven't noticed it for about the past hour and going to device manager reveals no unknown devices. I guess it was just a quirk of XP that something has taken care of. I'll consider it fixed.
Thanks for all the replies.
