I recently acquired an external hard drive. The drive is USB powered and the end of the cable that connects to the computer has 2 connectors on it. Is this to provide additional power to the drive?
 
Yes. That is exactly what it is for. Some external USB drives require two USB connections to run. The alternative is to use a powered hub and connect the one with the fattest cable. 🙂
