I upgraded to a phone that uses USB-C, which would render useless several long USB-micro cables of mine that are still in perfect working order. I can see on sale little adapters that one can plug a USB-micro cable into and provides a male USB-C connector, but I wanted to get peoples' opinions here about whether they're likely to be not as good as USB-C cables. I guess data transfer will be limited to USB 2.0 as that's my general experience with the USB micro connector, but is say charging speed likely to be any different?

Honestly if you're buying an adapter I'd just buy another USB-C cable. Cables are so cheap these days, and you're not creating a weak link where an adapter can come unplugged or you'd lose it in a car etc.
That would make the other issues you raised moot also regarding data transfer.

I thought I had bought 3-packs of Anker USB-micro cables (3-metre) but apparently they were no-name brands. I'll search around for non-Anker USB-C cables and see what I can find, because the one I bought was pretty pricey (£16.99 for 3m).

Monoprice.com?

Monoprice are the only cables I buy for mobile phone use or network cables.

I would only use adapters on a temporary as-needed basis because any time you add on another rigid section, you add additional leverage and strain to the relatively fragile, phone surface-mount USB port.

This is especially true if it's low quality and ill fitting so extra force is needed to plug and unplug it, but the same could also be stated about LQ cables themselves.

I use a Samsung 15W fast charger, and once in a while my Galaxy S21+ complains when I plug in my adapted micro USB cable. Other times it doesn't complain, but charges at the slow 0.5A rate. The multi-pack USB-C adapters were some generics bought off Amazon for cheap. Admittedly this cable's micro USB jack is a bit bent, so it must have been strained at some point a long time ago.

One thing I like about using an adapter is that micro USB devices are still common, so it's easy to yank the adapter off without having to do a full cable swap. I know there are several-in-one cables designed this way, but the whole idea here is to spend as little as possible on more cables. ;)

Our Galaxy S9+ phones use USB-C and came with the micro-to-C adapters. I've never used one...but keep them..."just in case."
As I said above, Monoprice offers GREAT cables at very good prices...I usually have a couple of spares for our electronic devices. (Usb-micro, usb/lightning, usb-c)
