USB and programming

This is a very broad question I know.

How does USB work?

Where can I find resources to program for it? I'd like to program for several temperature monitors, and LCD outputs, and plugging bared wires into my COM, game, and Serial ports us just plain messy (ugly too)

Can't help you out much - I do all my programming with the serial port. I would like to learn USB programming at some point in time.
