Ok here's the situation:
Hardware:
-Netgear MR814 Wireless Router
-Sagefast USB ADSL Modem
-Desktop (host) Computer
-Laptop with wireless card
Now, here's the deal. I am trying to get internet in my room. The primary desktop computer connects to the internet with an ADSL connection using an external ADSL modem. Now, being that the Netgear router only accepts an ethernet internet connection, I cannot branch the internet directly to the router which would make things much easier.
Here is what I have done. I connected the router to the host computer directly to create a network with my laptop. I then ran the network setup wizard to enable internet connection sharing. Unfortunately, upon doing this, the TCP IP address changes, making it impossible to connect the router. I then need to manually configure the IP address, to be able to use the network. This is where it gets a little odd. I can now connect to the shared folders on the host computer using my laptop in my room, but I cannot connect from the host computer to my laptop. I know that it can see my computer on the network but it cannot connect as a result of permissions. However, all the parameters on my laptop should be correct for access.
That being said, my laptop cannot see the shared internet connection. While it can connect to shared folders, I cannot browse the internet. I believe I followed all the instructions and troubleshooting suggestions in the windows help documents to no avail.
Current IP Setup:
Router: 192.168.1.1
Host: 192.168.1.2
Laptop: 192.168.1.3
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
The default settings on the Netgear router are to use the range 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.51, but I cannot enable internet connection sharing using that range due to an IP conflict. But as I said before, when I enable ICS, the IP setting on the host change, and I'm obliged to change them back to coincide with the router.
Before you say, just buy a proper ADSL router, I'm in Africa, and it's a little hard to come by electronics stuff. My mom sent our old router here from the states and I'm trying to make it work. Even if ICS is not possible with this setup, getting the host computer to be able to access files on my laptop would be priceless. I don't understand why there is an apparent problem with permissions while my laptop can access the host without problems.
So, anyone have some insight? Thanks in advance.
