Q: What is the switch on the side for and when should I use it?
A: The switch has two positions - Bus and Self.
You should set it to Bus when you are not using the power supply. This mode is for low speed and low power USB devices. If you are running devices that use less than 100mA then you can keep it set for Bus and not use the power supply. If you are using devices that draw more that 100mA then you will need to set the switch to Self and use the power supply. Self enables all ports on the hub to supply 500mA.
Whenever possible we suggest that you use the power supply and keep the switch at Self. When the switch is set for Self and you use the power supply both low power and high power devices can work at the same time on any of the ports.

Here is this exact model for sale on eBay and the picture in the auction shows a power cord -- another example of an eBay price being higher than the cost (AR) of buying it new at a B&M store.
