I'm looking for a USB 3.0 hub to use with my iMac and that will be able to run external drives through it. I bought one recently, it had good reviews and said it would be compatible for running an external HD but, it does not. When I plug the drive in, it just sets there with the led light on and never gets recognized by the iMac.

Any suggestions?

what is the file system on the drive? can you detect the drive plugging straight in or is it only happening with the USB3 hub? if it can see the drive, will it let you format it to maybe exFAT or whatever OSX uses?

i've had no luck with USB3 hubs personally. :(

You need a powered hub for that so the big question is does your hub have its own power supply or is it pulling solely off the usb port?

That's my thinking, too. I was pulling my hair out trying to use my monitor's USB hub with some drives. My BD-R only came up in USB 2.0 mode (and was substantially slower), and a couple thumb drives would show up in Device Manager, but not do anything further (wouldn't show up as disks, but might show the brand, or that it was a mass storage device, and always as USB 2.0). Other thumb drives, and card readers, worked fine, UASP and all. Turns out, it only has one high-power port. Everything worked fine in that one. So, I got a powered desktop hub, and it works with everything just fine.

Sounds like the drive does not have enough power.

What does the power supply provide? A comment on that page suggested 350mA. That's short of the 900mA a USB3 device can request. I don't think that would be enough for an external hard drive.

You're correct. Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't know the power requirements. I'll look for another hub.

Appreciate the info all! :)
