USB 3.0 adapter question

My son's computer is 2 yrs old and is of course, not USB 3.0 compliant. But it looks like there are options to add a PCIe card that will allow the motherboard to use USB 3.0. See link below for an example.

The question is that these cards are mostly for PCIe x 1 or x 4. And I don't have any of the small slots - only one full size slot available - can these small cards be used in the larger slot?
