So are there any that don't need a power adapter? Ones that get their power from the USB port?

Hey Biggies just pick up an old AT psu i have like 20 laying around they are great for things like modding becuase they dont need the motherboard to be turned on just hit the power button atatched to the psu and you have 10 molex cables ready to be used.

As for this deal i could have swore i saw these at newegg for the same price not to long ago but they are 20 something there now.

But for me i would save $3 shipping plus i want to pick up a few other things there.

Yes, but they are only reliable for notebook/laptop hard drives, and only sometimes at that. Because the USB port provides I think .5A of 5v power. This isn't enough for most hard drives, especially if it has to convert the 5v to 12v.
So if you want to go that route, get the USB cases that are small, that are the 2.5" laptop hdd size. But also make sure to get ones that CAN be powered by other sources as well if need be. Like some have 2 USB plugs so they can take power from 2 usb ports. Some have keyboard plugs because usually the keyboard port on a laptop is not used, and if it is the keyboard doesnt take all the power from it so it can be a passthrough for a keyboard.
Or some just have a plug that you can plug a little ac adapter into if nessasary.

For instance here's a 40 gig HDD for $72:
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=22-149-014&depa=1
Notice that it is 2.5" laptop hdd and has only 4,200 RPM instead of 5400 or 7200 RPM. Usually the 4200 RPM drives take much less power.
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=22-149-016&depa=1
Here's an 80 gig for $132 that is similar.

Yes laptop hard drives are much more expensive because they are small.

Many of the 2.5" USB cases even state this on newegg
"Application: Any 2.5" Parallel ATA Hard Drive with 4200RPM (Notebook size HDD up to 9.5mm)"

Here's one that takes power from an extra USB port:
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=17-145-368&depa=1
And here's one that takes power from USB but has a plug on the back where you can plug in 5v adapter if you want to:
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=17-145-329&depa=1
And here's one that has power from a PS2 port but has optional plug for external power
http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=17-146-304&depa=1

Some of these things come with little cases and other accessories and thats nice to have if you want to carry around extra storage for your laptop in your laptop case without adding a ton of weight and stuff.

Now am I right to be so concerned about power? Well let me put it this way, I have one with a 4200 RPM drive and it works most of the time. Sometimes some computers wont pick it up as USB 2.0, other times it wont be picked up if its in the USB port while the computer is booting, other times that is the ONLY way it can be picked up by the computer, if you put it in when it boots and not when XP is already running. It depends greatly on the computer and its kinda a hit and miss. The laptop I used it on had no problems, oddly enough it was the desktops that sometimes had these funky things. And that was one that had 2 USB plugs so it could take extra power.

So, there's a little rundown for you on some options without external power.

Received my unit from PC MicroStore earlier today 1/10/05. Ordered on the 1/6/05 and shipped out the same day with USPS priority. This little gadget worked like a charm. Here are the two devices that I tried, NEC 16x dvd burner ND3500a and Maxtor 200GB 7200RPM 8MB hard drive. Installation was simple, set the jumper setting on master mode, connect the IDE and 4pin power cable and a few seconds later XP recognize the external hardware. FYI- My hard drive was already formatted and partitioned and with data, so I skip that step as stated on the manual. Overall, I give the service and product provided by pcmicrostore.com an A+.

Yes of course they do. Some people prefer that. Some even come in dual firewire AND usb form. I prefer USB since its far more portable. But I guess if you already had firewire everywhere you might ever plug it in, or if you had a mac, you'd might want firewire.

If you goto newegg, and pick firewire as interface on the left in the proper category, you'll see all the firewire ones.

As for performance, USB 2 and firewire performance are probably going to be fairly close.

i have one of these, got it from compgeeks awhile back.

http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=USB2IDE-N

works pretty good, i've used it for burning dvd's and moving files around on off old harddrives.
Burning dvd's through a USB port eats your cpu cycles up something horrid. It works, just don't try to do anything else while burning dvd's

my only complaint is the power brick is as big as a laptop powerbrick, so the clutter factor is in effect.

I like it and recommend it.

Hey so does this come with a 3.5" to 2.5" laptop drive adapter? This is big in determining my purchase of this :)

Edit: I'm just trying to make absolute sure. I see stuff like this on eBay but some people are clear and unclear on the inclusion of a laptop drive adapter.

Package includes
USB 2.0 to IDE drive Adaptor

Compgeeks also mentions what is inside the package like this also and no mention of the 3.5" -> 2.5" adapter.

Also, where does the poster that I replied to ever mention he used a laptop drive with the kit?

Thanks a ton dude. These will come in handy at work big time. We frequently get laptop and desktop drives which we need to test and we never felt the need for an external enclosure. This'll cut down the pain of having to shut down my system every time to hook up a drive and even worse, fumbling around for more ide cables when you can't steal them from systems!

Edit: Very fair shipping. $14 for three of these to PA. Thanks OP and comm0dog!

I think it is using the Genysis Chipset. The ide adapter is translucent blue and it is kinda hard to tell. But I don't think its Ali becase the chip looks like is says GL****

Mine worked fine, though at first I thought it was DOA. It didn't work when I had the IDE cable plugged in the wrong way =P.

Thanks again OP!

Ordered one. Thanks realdeals.

This will be perfect for large home video files. Now I can use low cost IDE drives to store raw camcorder footage on the shelf. Just garb a drive, plug it in and transfer the files I need! Kinda like using a CF card. :)

Now for a storage solution for all the HDDs...
