There is no mention of being able to use it with 2.5" laptop drives in the discription.

hmm kinda wish this did firewire but the price is pretty decent. might have to build a little enclosure with 4 drives in it and a hub

Thanks for posting this. I don't mean to thread crap but at almost $21 shipped I think I'll wait for a deal on one with an enclosure.

if youre looking for something to be able to "swap out drives quickly," i like item this item from frozencpu. basically the same concept, just less clutter if you only plan on using the drive for a bit. only 9.99, ground shipping for me was under $7.

I like the thing that Frozencpu had was pretty cool. Keep in mind that it would not be hotswappable unless you have an IDE card that supports hot-swap. That is pretty uncommon. So you will have to shutdown and reboot each time you wanted to change drives. The USB device would not have that requirement.

Thats a cool little device, though as mentioned not hot swappable.

i was thinking about getting 2 of these for internal hdds. it'll look nicer than an ide pci card and a few ide cables. how fast is this usb 2.0 compared to reg. ide transfer.

thanks.

Slower and more CPU. If you want less cableage then why not grab a SATA drive? Plus you can't normally boot off USB. And the other end is a standard USB plug, you will still probably have to run it outside the case to plug in on the back since most USB cards dont have more than maybe one internal standard USB plug if that (instead of headers).

And you would need an adapter for 2.5 inch hd's.....

Anyone know where you can get that power adapter by itself? I want to attach some extra case fans I have around to some home theater components.

I doubt you are going to get any cheaper for just the AC adapter than the $14 here for the whole package. Most of the time if you buy an AC adapter you'll pay at least that. This is assuming you can find it. Usually if you want to power something with molex connector you buy a power supply that goes in a computer. Not individual AC adapters. Also you'd want to be careful about hooking up too many fans, it says 1.5 amps of 12v and 1.5 amps of 5 volt on the one I bought a couple months ago from a differant website. Many case fans take anywhere from .3v to .6v for the 80mm size.

Probably the cheapest you could come out is if you got a AC adapter that had 12 volts and cut off the end and connect a spare molex connector on the end. Case Fans usually run at 12v so you'd only need the one voltage.
