I got this case from xpcases.com (http://www.xpcases.com/shop/item.asp?CatID=1&Sku=105), and it's awesome. Only one problem. The frontside usb header connectors, are individuals. Meaning, 9 seperate connectors. Did some research and came up with the following order:

1 2 3 4 5
6 7 8 9

1 & 6 +5v
2 & 7 + USB Data
3 & 8 - USB Data
4 & 9 Ground
5 unused/ground

Thing is, when I plug a device into the front, it comes up with plug-n-play icon, but errors out. I forget the error specifically, but does anyone know if there are usb headers that are not 2.0 compatible (a7n8x dlx). The error is along the lines of "new device found", "device malfunction, device not installed". But the rear ports work fine. Any clue?

I had that problem trying to use a external 2.0 burner and Canon digital camera with the front USB 2.0 connectors on my chieftech and I've determined it's due to the front connectors being an unpowered hub. BTW, I can plug a logitech or MS optical USB mouse in the front and it works great so it's certainty that it's working.

Something I should try. I have an externally powered hub, should see if that works. If so, it sort of defeats the purpose of having frontside usb ports.
Thanks for the help

Bump for more info from more peeps.

I got a chieftek case, and ordered the usb/firewire kit to mount in the 3.5" slot. The connectors were like yours, each wire had to be attached individually. I used the pin assignments that came with my mobo, not the one that came with the kit. Works great. My pin layout is:

1-vcc
2- -data
3- +data
4&5- ground

6&7- ground
8- +data
9- -data
10- vcc

I thought that the front USB Header was no different to the rear ports, Windows 2000/XP Reports that 500mA are available per port....an unpowered hub provides 100mA per port so this cannot be right.

I should have mentioned XP gave me a pop up saying that I was connecting a device that may require a powered hub. I followed the pin assigment provided by a Asusboards member for the correct pin assignment for connecting the 6 connectors from his/my case (no 9 connectors here) to the correct 6 of 10 pin on the board so my issue may not be applicable to those of you with 9 connectors. As far as 500mA goes, if the connector isn't provided for powering the front hub then it is unpowered correct? Also, as speculation is taking place already ;) how 'bout providing some on why the USB mice work but not the other devices when those devices work perfect plugged into the back, and yes everything is fine in the device mangler.

Ah....yeah mine has 8 pins connected to a 9 pin header, I guess the extra 2 must provide the power. It probably stills provides a full 12mbps bandwith per port though I reckon.

In your case it must only provide 100mA per port....but device manager of course will see it as 500mA because this is what the header is providing but it is not hooked up....I can see that this will cause problems, windows will essentially see that the ports have 500mA but then the devices don't get this!

Hey Corm disregard my previous post and except my humble appology, I need to lay off the crack pipe I guess  ;) It's my 1394 hook up that I had followed the layout for with the 6 pins not my USB 2.0. The USB 2.0 is hooked up correctly according to the Asus manual, all 9 of 'em (just checked) so I'm probably dead wrong about the unpowered idea despite what XP or the external burners guide suggest and I'll have to keep searching to see why it and the camera don't like the front hook ups. I have other rigs that the front hook ups do work on with these two so I'll just have to be content with using them on those and moving stuff across the network if I want it on my main rig till I find the fix.

After further tinkering, I found my original posts configuration was correct, but inside the comp the wiring was wrong. I fixed it to match my post, and everything works peachy keen. WeeeEEEeee!!!
