USB 2.0 ports think they're 1.1

Hi all,

I'm having the same problem referenced here where my Thinkpad T40p thinks that it has USB 1.1 ports instead of 2.0. I have tried everything I can think of, including a full suite of driver upgrades, but to no avail. Any ideas? I'm running Windows XP SP2.

Device Manager lists a USB 2.0 controller and 3 USB 1.1 controllers; unfortunately, both ports think they are hooked up to the 1.1 controller (i.e. if I view the device manager by connections, you see any USB devices appear under a non-USB 1.1 controller). A message appears stating I have plugged a hi-speed device into a non-hi-speed port. And yes, the T40p specs detail that it has two USB 2.0 ports. The machine is 12 months old.

I'm totally confuzzled and would appreciate any suggestions. Things I have tried:

- Deleting and reinstalling USB drivers through the device manager
- upgrading chipset drivers
- upgrading EVERYTHING ELSE in the computer using IBM's software update tools
- making sure everything is current on Microsoft Update
- plugging things in in various orders
- strange incantations and a tribal dance that I just made up but thought might have promise

HELP!

Thanks,
Ian

Did you try to update the USB drivers in control panel after you got SP2?

Mine worked just fine when I did that but maybe something different is happening with yours.

Can you elaborate a bit? What do you mean "update USB drivers in control panel?" I've updated the chipset drivers to no avail...

also check the bios settings for the USB support. Some allow you to choose your USB support to be 1.1 or 2.0

Go into device manager, all of the USB devices, reboot and let the system redetect them.

Ian-

I have the same problem with a Thinkpad R40. I've found other posts on the Web and the only one that had a resolution was when the user had the system board replaced. I'm well out of warranty, but I'd be curious to know what you find. I'm about to register thinkpadusb.com to collect incidences of this problem. I think it's systematic.

This appears to be a known problem... although they never quite said as much. IBM is replacing my system board. I assume it will work after that 😉. If you're not under warranty and have the same issue, I would call them anyway. My guess is you didn't get what you were sold, and should be able to get a free or cheap mobo replacement.

Ah, company for my misery! I have the exact same problem with my T40 -- only, I brought it in to an IBM service center today, and they said, "Nope, definitely not a hardware problem, it's your drivers."

I've updated everything, flashed the BIOS, deleted & redected my USB drivers... no luck.

PCGeek, you said: Go into device manager, all of the USB devices, reboot and let the system redetect them.

I don't have any USB devices attached right now. Do I need to mount them (at 1.1 speed) then remove them using device mgr?

Thanks!

I'm afraid they likely lied to you, my friend. Seems to be a common problem on T40s, something about a miswired motherboard. After my motherboard replacement, I now have working USB 2.0 ports. I would call IBM directly, and have them send you a FedEx box to get the replacement work done. Usually just as fast as taking it in to a center (2-3 day turnaround time).

i'm having the same problem on my self built computer (specs in sig)

i presume you're getting the message "this device can perform faster if you plug it into a USB2.0 port, click here to see a list of available ports"

i've tried everything in this thread and everything i can think of too, does it sound like hardware failure?🙁

Got my new motherboard installed this weekend -- presto! USB ports now running at 2.0 speed again. Guess it was a hardware problem all along.
