I didn't know you could charge a docked device through USB alone. I'd think it'd need the power adapter too.

it's possible. a good example is the ipod as it can be charged through both the USB and firewire connections.

my pda and wireless mouse does need the power adapter in order to charge them.

Lol charging from your poor 500mA USB plug is just cruel to your system. You'll fry your USB tunnel in a matter of a year or so.

many scanners and mp3 players are charged via the usb ports. are you saying that everyone's computer will die within a year?

On my motherboard there are some jumpers to allow the power to be fed out. Check your mobo manual and see if you don't have to change some jumpers before it starts to output the power.

Has it worked before, and suddenly stopped? If so, then start shopping for a new motherboard.

V00D00 finally you're going somewhere... It has never worked before so I think it's something with the jumpers... Ive looked through the manual and I see something about "USB device wake-up jumpers" is this it?

No, that allows USB devices to turn on your computer from sleep mode. Kind of like the WOL (Wake on LAN).

EDIT: OP, maybe try charging your iPOD through a non-bus powered USB hub???

I do regularly charge my Palm from my usb port, never had a problem with any computer or usb ports go dead.

I suggest you check the usb power connectors on the motherboard to the ports with the markings on the wires and the manual/drawing. Usb has 4 connectors power +/- and data +/-. Usually if you get it wrong the port simply may not work or short the motherboard, but maybe you have only one wire wrong, so data is working. I once had my manual drawing wrong way around and for the life of me could not get usb to work till I rewired the connectors. The back connectors also sometimes have a plug to the motherboard, check it is seated properly.

you need to do it from a powered USB port
the ones on teh back of the mobo are powered, if you have a 5.25 I/O bay with USB ports in it they will be powered

normal front USBs are not always powered it depends on how you have the pins set, and a USB hub IS NOT powered unless you have it plugged into the power supply it came with

crunch8,

Burning out your USB port is nonsense. It makes no difference if it is "charging" your device or if it is "powering it". Either way, the spec defines how much current is allowed to be provided to a bus-powered device. If it's not exceeding this, then there is no danger.

The availability of bus powering and power usage information is provided by the USB initialization protocol. So, the host could not be using the bus-powered function or maybe there is a higher powered bus-powered USB function that it's not using. This could be because of a jumper, because of outdated drivers, or because your USB bus simply is designed not to provide that much power.

A couple of things:
Update your computer (XP SP2 if you don't have it)
Update your motherboard drivers
Do a google search on your mobo and USB together and see if you can find anyone else with any issues

I don't think the motherboard drivers will do anything, as it's purely in the hardware. I don't think the OS has any control over the output power of the USB.

Might want to consult the manufacturer of the motherboard.

I've been very surprised with fast turn around times when I've posted stuff on the ASUS site. Not sure what manufacturer your motherboard is though.

If you can find a phone number, try and give them a call, that will always yield the fastest results.
