Hello, I just received my USB 2.0 120GB External HDD in the mail and I can't seem to be getting it to detect.

I'm running Windows XP w/ SP3

I'm also using a PCI Card with USB 2.0 slots in it. I plugged it in, booted up my PC, and windows detected it and installed the drivers automatically and said it's ready for use.

When I plug my external drive into the USB 2.0 ports (any of them), nothing happens. I checked the device manager and there is nothing under disk drives at all, just my internal one.

Am I doing something wrong here? The drive itself didn't come with any software.

Thanks a ton.

First verify that your usb ports are working by plugging in a thumbdrive to see if it detects it. I know some external hdd have software that you have to
install on your computer. Did your's come with a installation disc ?

The USB ports do not work I guess. I just tried plugging my mouse and my printer into it and they aren't working. The PCI Card for the USB ports came w/ a disc with some drivers in some folders that are labeled VIA, NEC, and ALI. There is no auto-run or main installation.

As I mentioned above, Windows XP recognized the PCI card and automatically installed it. Of course I know that doesn't gaurantee anything...

get the HDD plugged into a working USB port, then ...

administrative tools > computer management > storage > disk management > hopefully from there you can find your new HDD and get it formatted / initialized and assign a drive letter

BTW the light on the HDD turns on when plugged into the USB 2.0 ports.

My mouse doesn't work when I unplug it out of my onboard standard USB port and into a USB 2.0 port. Should it?

Yes you can..... you will notice that it is slower. Go ahead and plug it in to test it.
