USB 2.0 CD-ROM / Hard Drive Enclosure @ NewEgg for $38 Shipped

Nice price, gonna snag one, thx, edro13. 🙂

Shucks, an IEEE1394 port would have been better.

My sister's Inspiron only has USB1.1 which would bring it down to a crawl.

Please excuse my lack of knowledge about this, but is it correct to say that if I have an old maxtor 30gb 5400 rpm ide drive that I can turn it into an external drive with just this kit and a usb cable? Any help is appreciated and I am certainly not the only one who doesn't know this so your information will be helpful to many. I also forgot about my old 12x10x32 cdrw internal drive, could this also be converted with just this kit?

Rhess3, I hope so. I have a 1.1 USB kit with hard drive that I am going to upgrade to the 2.0. I also have a Pioneer A05 that I am going to put in another. I bought 2!

why not, when they were $150 a piece at staples? also, can you put two hard drivess in one enclosure if you change the cable to a two channel ribbon? just curious, because that would be awesome!

These work great, I got one about a year ago for about $50.00. I ended up installing a removable drive rack system in it, works great just..just slide in a drive rack.

Compgeeks has one for about the same price (after coupon). They also have a firewire one (like 10 bucks more), and one with both USB 2.0 and firewire for I think 57.

The one @ compgeeks looks a bit nicer, but note it's only a 3.5" enclosure, onyl for hdds, floppy drives, and zip disks...

Also it seem newegg is back in stock.

Also i'm kinda unfamiliar with external enclosures.. do they all require separate power supply? I think i've seen some external harddrives that draw power from usb.

Thsi looks cool when they get some more in stock.

If I have a USB2.0 card and this enclosure, that's all I need for USB 2 to work right?

sorry but I just haven't seen any usb2 working yet.

I ordered mine Monday and got it yesterday.

I was a little leary because the price was so low and it looks kinda cheap in the pics. After I got it out, and checked it over...... this thing is real solid and good quality! It looks great too. I peeled the little HI-SPEED USB sticker off the top of it and it looks real good. My DVD-R drive fits in it real well and the whole thing assembled is real solid. The fan in the back is real quiet as well.

This is a real good deal.

Are there any drivers or anything that needs to be installed when using the USB drives? I had read somewhere that with USB you might need to load some drivers onto the system while with FW you don't. True?

I just ordered one, it's $58.90 + $6.00 Shipping. I bought the USB 2, only awhile back, it's good. It's selling for $39.80 at CompGeeks.

Nope. It comes with a driver CD, but I use XP and it detects everything automatically. Nero found the drive automatically and instantly as well.

Just recieved mine today! Works great too. Just plugged it in and detected my TDK12832 CDRW Drive without any drivers to install (from the CD that is). Thanks for the deal edro13!!!
