USB 1.1 to USB 2.0 possible without hardware upgrade?

I tried transferring music to my friend's computer on a USB 1.1 port (told to me by windows on his computer) and it was taking forever (transferring with my external hard drive).

My question is if I can upgrade his USB 1.1 to a USB 2.0 without physically replacing the hardware? As in, is there a bios/firmware upgrade possible somewhere to do this?

No, you can not. The simplest way would be to buy a usb 2.0 PCI card and install that.
