US warships head for South China Sea after standoff

"A potential conflict was brewing last night in the South China Sea after President Obama dispatched heavily armed American destroyers to the scene of a naval standoff between the US and China at the weekend."

Seems like we have enough problems in the world without messing with China right now. They could cripple our economy in an instant.

We should invest some of that free money into reducing our dependance on Taiwan's technical industry. Then we wouldn't have to wave dicks with China.

Nothing will come of it. At least he is showing some backbone. Just like North Korea is seeing how far it can push the new administration.

Not really much else to be done. China is being a saucy boy claiming all that water as its own, so if it really is international, we can't very well have fishing trawlers with naked guys dancing around scaring off US navy ships, it's just not good for the image.

hehe, ya. This kinda thing is risky though. I agree with OC regarding not needing an escalation with China. I suspect the show of force will have the desired affect and nothing bad will happen.

Joe was right; countries are going to test this new administration in the first 6 months.

There's no threat of real conflict...China is just testing the water.

Is it me or is this situation overblown? The ships were fishing trawlers, not chinese warships.

Never underestimate an adversary willing to strip down to his underwear and be sprayed with a fire hose in an attempt to scare you away.

This is definatly just a show of force. I just always worry about the potential for quick escalation over miscommunication or an accident.

OMG!!!11!!

What does he think he is doing taking care of world affairs!!1 doesn't he understand he has a broken economy to focus on!?!?

WTF!!11!!! is he trying to divert attention from his "porkulus" package!!!!

OMGWTFFF!!!111!!!11! Raaageeeeeeaaahhhhhhhh!!

LMAO... :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

The mighty USA is frightened by 4 tiny fishing boats and 1 trawler with their crew stripped to their underwear enough to send destroyers to guard their "spy" ship (don't know what it's actual class is) that could plow under said fishing boats with only a damaged paint job.

If I was the Chinese I would have closely shadowed the ship with my own spy ships to study every aspect of the ship. If I had wanted to the ship away from a area I would have a small fleet of cheap ships (doesn't need to be armed, just fast enough and can stay out at sea) to block the unwanted ships path if it proceeded in X direction (but not the farce that Chinese did) so it would look real bad for the USA if they plowed under one my defenseless ships so they could spy on my base or whatever. Also wouldn't matter how many escorts they send, even a whole carrier battle group for all I care, just block that spy ships path and condemn the USA if they sunk one of my defenseless ships. I would now have a excuse to stonewall any American interests that I can and if the USA retaliates some how it'll get real ugly, and making it not worth it in the first place to sink one of my ships to spy on my base which I don't ever plan on using against the USA. Thus the Chinese navy (probably told the fishermen to go and do this) are incredibly stupid.

I happen to like ATI's video cards thank you very much.

Also noticing how western media avoids mentioning that the Chinese ships in question are fishing boats crewed by fishermen that where also unarmed. They try to make it sound like it was Chinese warships.

With the caveat that any real escalation with China would have to be something far bigger, I agree. Not to say this wasn't a serious event, I'm just glad no one died this time in the latest Chinese provocation.

Looks like the GOP noise machine has to reverse it's spin angle, again. The weak liberal is now a headstrong cowboy. Thank you Obama, in addition to letting China know you ain't no punk bitch, you've assured us months of amusing television.

I think this action has two audiences: American Public and the Chinese.
To the Chinese, this isn't a show of force in the sense that we will attack as much as it is a show of 'yes we can'. The point is you have the Chinese trying to harass the USA out of what they claim to be waters (but is actually international waters). So as long as we operate within agreed distances, then we are fine. Obama is simply saying, "Watch me do what we are allowed to". Chinese government bitching isn't going to change that, and sending more ships there establishes that.
To the American Public, it is a show of force. To pull a Fox News, there are some who say that this president is weakling who will be pushed around internationally. Sending warships after a minor 'annoyance' that the Chinese pulled is a direct statement saying "Watch me act like a tough guy"

What is the real result? People thinking Obama is less of a pansy, and China knowing that it has to wait until it has real military power to try to enforce something like that...or try with another administration in 4/8 years

To hedge his bets, Obama also invited the Chinese foreign minister to the White House to talk about this issue and ask for more money.

Good thing we sent warships then.
