US to announce sanctions against Syria
By MELISSA RADLER

The Bush administration will announce sanctions against Syria in the coming days, a prominent Jewish leader said Wednesday.

"We have assurances from the administration that in the coming days, sanctions against Syria will be announced and that they [the administration] will act based on the legislation passed by Congress," said the executive vice chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Malcolm Hoenlein

The Syrian Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Restoration Act, which directs the president to ban sales of weaponry and dual-use items to Syria unless the nation abandons its support for terrorism, removes its troops from Lebanon, stops the flow of terrorists into Iraq, and abandons its pursuit of nonconventional weapons, was signed into law by President George W. Bush in December.

In an interview with the US-funded Arabic-language TV station al-Hurra, Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said this week that sanctions "will come in the not too distant future. It's inevitable," he said.

Hoenlein said that the Presidents Conference, which represents 52 national Jewish groups, is "appreciative of the fact that this action will be taken."

"We were concerned by the delay but understand the reasons for it. We hope this will have the desired impact especially at a time when Syria is posing more and more of a problem in the region," he said.

In the mean time Israel is turning up the heat

That's been the plan all along- first Iraq, then Syria, the last hostile regime within striking distance of Israel. WTF, you guys think that the invasion of Iraq wasn't largely the tail wagging the dog?

Re-elect GWB, and you'll see another war, in Syria, and again in Lebanon, where the Syrians are the only reason that the Lebanese have some semblance of peace.

I suspect that the long range plan for the Palestinian problem is to relocate them, for their own protection, of course, in Syria and Iraq. The Israelis can't accomplish that themselves, so Uncle Sam will help them out, as usual. Restore the kingdom of Israel, rebuild the temple, bring on the Messiah- or so it goes, anyway...

Yeh, sounds like tinfoil hat territory, until you google up "Reconstructionist" and "Dominionist", and realize how much influence these guys have over the Whitehouse and Congress. Not to mention the blatantly pro-Iraeli NeoCon persuasion....

Not among the sanctions was an expected curb on future investments by U.S. energy companies, who constitute the only major American corporate presence in Syria, Reuters reported.
