I heard something on NPR about a dude who was tasked with spending 3 million per day in an area of Afghanistan that was described as the size of a typical US County. A COUNTY.
All while there appears to be zero money during the meltdown for jobs programs or mortgage assistance.
Imagine the good that could be done in you County if it had 3 million dollars per day dedicated to be spent on improvements for let’s say one year.
Does any believe action in Iran would be cheaper than Afghanistan? The 3 million per day figure is just improvements, that is not inclusive of the security budget. Security was a totally separate thing.

Thanks for the reminder. I've read b/4 (can't remember source) that we've spent $2T between the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Freaking Insane. I understand why we were in Iraq after the war (the war itself being bullshit), but I really have no fucking clue why we are still in Afghanistan.

Lol Esper said that the US doesn't start wars but it finishes them. Somebody should have asked him which ones specifically in the last 20 years he'd be talking about. We started both current ones and the one in Afghanistan is old enough to vote and counting.

My problem is whether the administration did any real risk calculation and had a cohesive plan in place to protect against likely responses. I don't need them to be playing chess, even checkers would be good enough. Instead I feel like they're playing tic-tac-toe and declaring victory after each move.

Believing that killing a formal state actor this senior will result in no incremental response is idiotic. Simply to save face to their own nationalists, Iran will have to make some public action. It scares me the administration is clearly trying to figure this out "after" the fact.

Trump made the descision to strike just a few days b/4 it happened, so I'm going with no - not much planning at all. They would typically need weeks (the NSC) to properly plan for this. And, yes - we deserve an administration that IS playing chess! Fuck the stupid game of checkers Trump and his lackeys are currently playing.

It’s not bullshit. Iran has steadily since this past summer undermined the JCPOA over demands for increased trade from the EU, and there has been tensions with France in particular over the detainment of a French academic in Iran. These are not the actions of a nation looking to comply.

Still bullshit. *Trump* renounced the JCPOA in 2018, remember? But they're supposed to uphold it, anyway. Really? And even though Iran has returned to their enrichment program it's still under the watchful supervision of the IAEA.

Nice red herring with the French academician, btw. It's just more of the usual demonization.

The international community is bigger than America and Iranian grievances over EU extortion payments is what caused tensions to rise over the summer.

Trump, not at all. As more info comes out, it is apparent that Pompeo pushed for this option. He should justify the why.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran state TV says Tehran has launched “tens” of surface-to-surface missiles at Iraq’s Ain Assad air base housing U.S. troops over America’s killing of a top Iranian general.
State TV described it early Wednesday as Tehran’s revenge operation over the killing of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

U.S. forces could not be immediately reached for comment.
Ain Assad air base is located in Iraq’s western Anbar province. It was first used by American forces after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion that toppled dictator Saddam Hussein. It later saw American troops stationed there amid the fight against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

State TV said the operation’s name was “Marytr Soleimani.” It said the Guard’s aerospace division, which controls Iran’s missile program, launched the attack.
