I’m curious to know how the Iraqi Sunnis, especially former Baathists and ISIS sympathizers, are reacting to this strike. Enemy of my enemy (who recently was *my* enemy) is now my friend?? Or is it more like “LOLOL America so dumb... thanks for the kill!”

ftr, the Sunni's are the minority, about 37% of the population and dominate the upper 2/3 of the country. Iraq could easily be split into two countries, the Sunni north and the Shia south.

VICE posted this today, a far deeper look into Iraq and the relationship with Iran than one will even see on CNN, MSNBC or FOX...

and a couple of maps that show the religious/geographic reality and population...

For all of the speculation about the ways in which Iran might retaliate, it seems the most obvious and easiest thing for Iran's government to do for the moment is to destabilize Iraq and turn people against the US-leaning government. It would put pressure on Iraq's government to step back from US support, and things get out of control, it would endanger the security for the 5000-6000 US troops still there.

Excuse me, but that's what the Trump admin is doing, isn't it? Iraqi sovereignty? Fuck that. We'll bomb anybody we want in Iraq, including popular citizen militias loyal to the govt. Because evil Iranian threats & shit. I mean, yeh, sure, the Admin can sell damned near any lie to the American public but the Iraqi govt doesn't have that luxury with their people. I expect we'll receive an invitation to GTFO of their country rather shortly. They can't put up with this. They can't afford to be seen as outright American puppets.

BLAMMO!! Correct el mundo!!!!

STFU. You don’t know my motives. I asked you specifically what you meant earlier, but you ignored that post. Obviously, I detest our recent involvement in the middle east, especially what Bush II wrought, but I already said that. You are inventing some bullshit here because what? I’m not pissed off enough at the GOP? Because I take a longer view of history? WTF is your deal.

I didnt ignore anything. I told you the last 30 years. Anything before that doesnt really matter. We are in te land of chuds and facists gop now.

Yeah, pretty sure that today’s GOP would label FDR and Kennedy’s Democrats as socialist war mongers. WWII, Korea (Ike is a Democrat by today’s standards), Bay of Pigs, ‘Nam, etc. etc.
would be you guys who might despise the traditional liberal like Kennedy. Today's socialists would have no room for such liberalism.

There is all sorts of stupidity in that post! You say this as the party currently has two billionaires running for president, one democratic socialist, and a pro consumer pro capitalist, and a small businessman as well.

Maybe you should step away from the keyboard.

Lol. And fascists, both then and now, have no room for any liberalism at all. You all keep telling us it's a mental disorder, remember?

And of course thats why the Bush admin thought it was a great idea to bring democracy to Iraq. To basically hand over Iraq to the Iranians on a silver platter.

You provided no proof for your assumption....what you posted is not proof at all!!

JFC

Plus the admin is making wild claims to congress that Soleimani was planning a massive, and seemingly illogical, escalation in order to justify the action. They provide no proof to back this up. Going out on a limb here to say it's almost certainly bullshit.

Wanna bet Trump supporters will immediately pull an intellectually dishonest 180 and jump back on the "intelligence services are reliable and not the deep state bandwagon" as soon as Trump uses them to lie about his justification?

You mean you dont get that Iran wields tremendous influence over Iraq due its Shia majority? Democracy in Iraq basically means Shia rule. Shia rule means Iran involvement and influence, which we are seeing play out as we speak. You dont understand that?
