US soccer team loses to Mexico 0-4, won't attend Olympics.

:(

Too bad. Soccer needs a bigger place in American sports, but American attention spans aren't long enough.

Hrmmmmm...I hope this doesn't lead to chants of "Osama" during other international sporting events vs. the US.

I think one of the main reasons soccer isn't popular is because you can't sell TV advertising space for it. 45 minutes without a commercial break.

Maybe if it were on TV more, people would watch. But because of the advertising and such, it can't be.

No it doesn't, we have plenty of sports for Americans to enjoy.

If the American people don't embrace soccer than the level of our best players will continue to lag behind the rest of the world. I love seeing American internationals doing well in European leagues, but as a soccer fan, it's frustrating to think of what that level could be if people actually cared.

That statement reminds me of a Far Side cartoon. You know the one with the kid with a tiny little head sitting in a classroom? He raises his hand and says something like, "Can I be excused? My brain is full."

Personally, I have some room in the back. I'll just clear out pro bowling, the world's strongest man competitions and all the Sportscenter's where they play that craptastic "I love blah blah blah" song.

I don't think that lack of attention span is the problem (look at baseball), it's lack of marketability as someone below mentioned. If a company can't commercialize it and make it broadcastable for TV, it will never be as popular as traditional American sports. It's the same reason that hockey isn't as popular as say, football. Despite the availability to insert commercials, it just doesn't televise as well as something like American football.

Exactly. Soccer sucks anyways. We Americans are FAR too superior to watch that crap.

Football is great.

Not tha suprised they lost. Mexico are a good team. Americans don't have the heritage and the history of Football. If they had I'm sure it would be bigger and you guys would dominate Football. In England and everywhere else in Europe kids play Football in lunch breaks. It is on after school and the turn outs are big. Kids play at clubs. Adults go watch it every weekend without fail. The stadiums are mainly full. England is Football CRAZY.

But it is alright though. Americans pretty much dominate every other sport!

That's the most retarded argument for non-proliferation of the sport that I've heard...

What's wrong with split screening for commercials??? It works here in Canada, and advertisiers were fine with it...

Hey jackass, soccer is pretty popular for the younger kids (especially by my home town). America isn't doomed because these kids decide to play other sports when they get to high school and college.

Soccer just isn't a sport that most Americans are interested in. Baseball and Football are. We also don't follow Formula One (probably the second most popular sporting event in the world) but Nascar is huge here.

I don't see why it is such a big deal for some to argue about it. It's just a fact. I don't really see this changing anytime soon either.

BTW-I don't find soccer all that interesting to watch. I like NFL, sometimes I watch a baseball game or go to one and I usually follow the second half of the Basketball season (Go Lakers!). I usually watch some of the Olympic games when they are on also. My real interest is Formula One Racing and I watch most every practice session (that is aired), every qualifying session and every race during the season. This is pretty much the extent of my sports watching.

because i want to be able to take throne breaks and grab beers without worrying that the only goal in the whole game will be scored in the 2 minutes I'm gone!

That's nice. I'm not sure what it has to do with me saying that "soccer sucks" and "We Americans are FAR too superior to watch that crap" are ignorant statements, but it's nice.

Mexico ousted our baseball team too. No USA representation in the olympics for baseball or soccer.:frown:

The Olympics are just a bunch of commercialized crap anyway. I'll go back to believing them to be worthwhile when they start showing them on multiple networks and one corporation doesn't control all the 'rights' to important parts of world history.

A lot of Americans don't follow F1 because of the times most races are on TV. I love basketball (huge Laker fan myself), football, and NASCAR, but if it meant getting up at 4:00am to watch those things, I wouldn't be watching them any more. Yea I could replayTV it, but I like to watch sporting events as they happen.

That sucks that they didnt make it to the olympics... that would have been fun to watch them play this summer. The World Cup was awesome to watch. If the US cant take it then long live Brasil!

Well the US GP is here and sometimes that isnt even broadcasted live if ABC airs it... and still ratings suck. Fact of the matter is... F1 is just too boring for them... they like NASCAR with the multiple lead changes per lap. WRC isnt live either but that has a bigger US audience than F1 here.
