Actually what I think would work would be to break this country up in to 5 or 6 autonimous areas. Unfortunately it woudn't be so equitable for the South and Mid West as they wouldn't be able to suck the teet of the West, Northeast, Mid Atlantic and Texas.

Shrug, Louisiana will be just fine once that happens and we start getting ALL of the offshore oil revenue of which the Feds are fucking us as we currently get none. We control 1/3 of this nations oil, nat gas, and petro-chemicals so the Northeast can play ball with us or they will be in for a mighty cold winter. Tack on a few excise taxes to all the oil, gas, and other petro-chemicals we send to the other regions and we probably wouldn't have to tax our people a dime. Throw in the Mississippi river and we got it made.

That stuff doesn't go into those charts people like to throw around about where Federal money goes and how much Federal income taxes are collected from those places.

North East would not be able to feed/heat itself. - It will need to continue sucking off the rest of the country.

Mid Alantic would have to rework its economy but couild survive.

As long as CA can leach off other states for power and water, it will be OK

It seems to me that every time the government gets more money they get equally less efficient and nothing good comes of it.
And the people have less money.

The problem with a national sales tax is that it could never be the only Federal tax because if it was higher than 10% it wouldn't bring in enough revenue and too many people would evade it if it was higher than 10%. They also shouln't tax services, nor should they tax food, drink, or medicine. They could pair it with excise taxes, but then those couldn't be too high either or else there would be evasion.

The "FairTax" as proposed is heading for disaster.

I think we could have a hybrid system. Where we have both an income tax at a low rate and also a low federal sales tax. That way we can get money from both the rich and the middle class and the lower middle class. We could even exempt food items if someone has some kind of foodstamp ID or Aid ID if they are really poor. Or if you file your taxes and your income is too low, the IRS could send you a fed tax exemption card good for 12 months.

People are always saying rich people put their money into sheltered status like a corporation or retirement plan, so even the rich need to buy something sooner or later. Everyone buys stuff over the course of a year. So this could just supplement the federal income tax. This tax could be collected Monthly so it could actually help to supplement budgets in tough times.

My thinking is people tend to spend less when times are bad so there is no way we could use this kind of tax to replace an income tax. However, this could enable a lower income tax rate or maybe a flat rate.

I think we could start at 2% and see how much revenut that creates to get a test case.

What money did the federal government pay me?

What essential service does the federal government actually provide?

Killing people in Iraq is not that essential.

As long as they eliminate the income tax and replace it with this I don't see a problem.

I would prefer a fair/flat tax but a national income tax essentially does the same thing.

Good thing as they and FL can carry the rest of the Deep South.
