New Lincoln Penny Tails Look

Authorized by Public Law 109-145, the four new designs celebrate the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln?s birth, as well as the 100th anniversary of the production of the Lincoln cent (penny). The new designs will be issued in approximately three-month intervals throughout the year. The first redesigned penny, which will honor Lincoln?s birth and early childhood, will be put into circulation on February 12, 2009.

Why do we have pennies?

Someone please explain this to me. If I have a penny, I can't by anything with it. What's the point?

Then do not keep them. When Walmart charges you 2.97, give them $3 and do not take the change. Problem solved.

Alright, so people have already talked about phasing out the penny. Then it came to light that it cost more than 1 cent to make each penny. Now they're pissing away more money on them by doing a redesign? But hey, it's ok to waste taxpayer money, we'll just pay more of it next year!

Does this redesign happen to address the cost issue? Do they use less metal, or a cheaper alloy?

This new penny might cost less. Is it still the same alloy used?

As of now, it's 2.5 cents to make then distribute a penny.

If you have 100 pennies, you can buy something that costs a dollar.

By that reasoning..

What can you buy with 5 or even 10 cents nowadays?

I don't even think 25 cents buys you a pack of gum anymore.

They don't even take pennies in bulk at B&M. Some stories I go to don't take bulk coins for payment, they have a sign that tells you the max number of coins they take for each denomination.

remember the card for "tape a penny here and receive 10 cassette tapes" and it was all crap like hall and oates greatest hits and kenny loggins and john tesh? man, those were the days.

I would be in favor of getting rid of everything below a quarter.

Because people are really, really stupid. Whenever someone suggests abolishing the penny, you get the same stupid arguments about stores ripping people off and how much money we'll all lose every year because of rounding, and so on and so forth.

Nevermind that:
1. Many other countries have eliminated their lowest unit of currency in the past without issue.
2. THIS COUNTRY has eliminated its lowest unit of currency in the past without issue (Half cent )
3. $.01 100 years ago had the value of $.22 in today's dollars. That is, the smallest increment in prices back then was equivalent to about a quarter today. Why do we need increments that are so much smaller than what they had 100 years ago?

We should have gotten rid of the penny a loooooong time ago. I think the nickel also costs ~$.07 to produce and distribute, so get rid of that one too. Round at the end of the transaction, and no one gets screwed.
