US Military pilots regularly take speed

Did you know this? 😕 The military gives them "go pills" prior to taking off so they can be more alert and resist fatigue, and according to a report in the toronto star they can face punishment if they refuse. Some people are linking its use to the FF accident in the spring that killed the canadians. I know it makes sense considering the length of the missions some of these guys go on...but I never knew it was so condoned! :Q

Yeah, they've been taking them for a while now

From WebMD:

What should I avoid while taking dextroamphetamine?
? Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Dextroamphetamine may cause dizziness, blurred vision, or restlessness, and it may hide the symptoms of extreme tiredness. If you experience these effects, avoid hazardous activities.

FYI ANY side effects that have ever occured have to be published in a special package insert sent to pharmacies. That is what you have above. Rarely would it produce negative effects, and the docs give them a trial dose to see if they have problems with the med before using it in flight

I wonder what the long term effects are

They are given 10mg of dextroamphetamine. This was news in July.
Well...perhaps its was 'news' to some in July. The military has been using pep pills for decades to combat fatigue and sleep deprivation. It has been public knowledge for many years.

But it is fun to see someone just 'discover' something that has been known for...like...ever.

Yup. Back in WWI they gave troops amphetamines to stay awake well on guard duty.

Harry: "No way... that's great... we've landed on the moon!!"

Yeah, I posted this a while back and got flamed to sh|T.

They take the uppers (go pills, like dexedrine)for activities, later followed with a downer (opiate) to bring them back to baseline.. more or less, just not to let their mind go raw.. (not literally, but its mentally distressing after a while, no sleeping will do that...) the downers are opiates in a sense, so its two illegal drugs.. *

On the other hand, the drug does give them more accute senses, more alertness, hightened concentration, faster reaction time. They can go without sleep for slightly longer periods of time while maintaining their abilities. It is impressive.. but...

* So thats my point, they have two illegal drugs in common use with many, many pilots. Your Government is really pushing the WOD... the same government.. "if you buy drugs you support terrorism..."... well they just manufacture pharm grade drugs on their own and make it acceptable.. some how.. damn double standards. Anyone who has ever had to take Dexedrine knows that it isn't a normal or mild feeling... there IS a crash on the way down and it is mentally exhausting. That's dangerous.. it can/does cause a lot of emotional problems, it can really depress you and make you incapable of dealing with certain things.

Oh well, not surprising.. your DEA was down with Mr. Shulgin.. now look what he's done... 😉

Yeah, there was a good reason why, too. Drugs are not drugs are not drugs, nor are the motives and reasons for taking them. I and other narcoleptics have to take amphetamines or other CNS stimulants just to perform daily tasks that you take for granted like driving, which is why they are legally available to me. That is quite different from you taking amphetamines for recreation and entertainment.

The military is not dispensing drugs to pilots for recreation or entertainment, pilots are taking them to combat the rigors of protecting your dumb ass so that you can get high and complain about the government's double standard.
