US military history

has america ever lost a war???? an international conflict?

i can't think of any, but anyone that's been alive longer than me or remembers more from history please enlighten me

It depends on your definition of lost. In Vietnam, we weren't willing to do what it would have taken to win. The NVA simply wanted it more.

The USA won the Civil War. The CSA lost. I won't touch on the rest, you need to get your facts straight first.

Don't quote casualties. Just because we killed more than they did doesn't mean we won. If we won, what exactly did we win?

We lost.

Face it.

Vietnam was a disaster.

War of 1812?
Yup.

EDIT: All the others that people mention aren't really "losses". But the War of 1812 is the closest to a loss you could come to, seeing as the U.S. started it by invading Canada, was repelled, and the British invaded the U.S. and burned Washington D.C.

I think you have to define "Lost". To me, losing a war requires a surrender or total destruction of forces. In those terms we haven't lost a war.

EDIT: Except the war of 1812. I don't think I ever really learned about this one so I leave it to those who know more about it.

civil war doesn't count because we were fighting ourselves so either way, we would have lost.

Korean war ended with us repelling back and chinese push and then establishing a DMZ zone- that is, rather than forcing korea to stay together, the communists got their own land, and so did South Korea. I would call this a victory.

Vietnam war was a war that we lost (i believe)

afghanistan- we managed to remove the enemy regime from power- and did it quickly too! that sounds like victory.

Iraq- caught their leader (Saddam), and that should have been the end, but we're sticking around to insure that they establish a stable government. if we left now, we can claim to have removed an enemy regime from power, but that would be wrong on so many levels if we left the nation in shambles. Not a loss, most definitely, but still lots of work to be done.
