A US general has been suspended in Iraq over the alleged abuse of prisoners by US troops in jails she ran.
Brigadier General Janis Karpinski is among seven officers being investigated following claims that soldiers under their command mistreated detainees.

The army confirmed the suspension after US television broadcast images of US soldiers allegedly abusing inmates at Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad.

CBS TV says it has "dozens" of pictures showing a wide range of maltreatment.

Taken by US troops, many of the pictures show American troops watching in apparent approval.
CBS says the pictures it obtained show a wide range of abuses, including:

Prisoners with wires attached to their genitals

A dog attacking a prisoner

Prisoners being forced to simulate having sex with each other

A detainee with an abusive word written on his body.
The prison where the abuses are alleged to have taken place was a notorious torture centre during the Saddam Hussein era.

Bob Baer, a former CIA operative with extensive Iraq experience, told CBS: "If there [was] ever a reason to get rid of Saddam Hussein, it's Abu Ghraib [prison]."

Good. At least there's some level of accountability over there. Unlike our civilian leadership . . .

You know what though, where there's smoke there's fire -- this story only makes one imagine there are other abuses happening in Iraq. Ones that are not being reported. Ones that the media is not making us aware of. I wonder if this is just the tip of the iceberg as they say, and that other similar cases are going on but not being prosecuted due to lack of coverage.

WTF?! Why are they charging a leader for this chit?!? Those horrible soldiers are solely responsible for abusing Iraqis. Leadership had nothing at all to do with this! How appalling!

The roach theory, see one there's a hundred hiding.

On the "positive" side, when exposed these people are getting punished; at full Gestapo mode they would get medals.

They're trying to pin the blame on the leaders.

If we recruited people who had 1/2 a brain, situations like this wouldn't happen. Think back to your school days. When a teacher left the room, who were the first ones to start acting up? The idiots, the class clowns, the morons. The ones who probably never graduated high school, much less gone on to college.

Now, is the reason these kids don't care about consequences the fault of the teacher? No, it's innate with hoodlums like that. They're trouble waiting to happen.

Abuse in prisons happens EVERYWHERE. Name one prison where abuse doesn't occur. Although unfortunate, it's nothing special. Just another example of liberal media trying to blow/hype something up. Under Saddam, they would have all been DEAD!

Doesn't excuse these things though.

I think she was never trained properly and didn't have enough troops to do the job right so she chose to rape and murder and torture prisoners and take really groovy pictures of the acts with her soldiers smiling as they rubbed their genitals on the naked Iraqis.

Then don't ever cry about police brutality or political abuse of power - ever.

Mr. conjur. Please tell us about enlistment standards and how these enlistment standards contribute to an atmosphere of "idiots, class clowns, morons and hoodlums". Begin.

It's funny how when the U.S. army tortures prisoners, it's the fault of the soldiers . . . but when Iraqis under Saddam Hussein torured prisoners, it's only because of explicit instruction by Saddam.

"explicit instruction by Saddam"... no, but definitely given approval by the regime under Saddam.
And there was a deck of cards load of people under Saddam that we were looking for during the
height of conflict.

Most likely it's due to the fact that Saddam actively participated in executions, and encouraged his sons to partake as well. You ever heard of a US president throwing people to dogs, or lining them up to off them with a rifle? Care to guess what Saddam's first role was in the Ba'athist party? I guess that's one of the drawbacks of being a totalitarian dictator, you are the final say in everything, and can't really blame things on underlings. As I hope Bush and Cheney will soon discover, accountability is a muthafvcka.

Please don't take my challenge to a partisan quip to mean I view all conservatives the same. Indeed, there are some liberals who annoy me more than the most ardent of Bush fellators.

You know what this forum needs? Weevils. ;)
