US general: Strong, sophisticated Taliban emerging

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Taliban forces fighting U.S. troops in Afghanistan have grown stronger and more sophisticated, and are directing operations from neighboring Pakistan, a senior U.S. commander said on Wednesday.

More than four years into the war in Afghanistan, an operation often overshadowed by the focus on Iraq, the top U.S. commander there said the Taliban has grown in the south and reconstituted itself elsewhere. It is displaying better military command and its leaders remain elusive, he said.

"The fact remains that we're up against an enemy that is able to operate very effectively on both sides of the border," Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry said in testimony to U.S. lawmakers. "There's areas that they're able to stay within and to direct combat operations against ourselves and against the Afghan National Army."

Despite growing violence funded, U.S. officials say, by drug money, NATO will take over military operations in southern Afghanistan in July, according to Mary Beth Long, the Defense Department's principal deputy assistant secretary for international security affairs.

Ultimately, NATO rather than the United States will play the lead military role throughout Afghanistan. Long did not offer lawmakers a timeline, saying NATO would take full responsibility when conditions were "right."

The planned transition to NATO's military leadership will allow the United States to bring home some of its 23,000 troops in Afghanistan, a Pentagon spokesman said.

But in his public testimony, which preceded a closed-door classified briefing to lawmakers, Eikenberry did not discuss troop levels or offer a timeline for their drawdown.

While the U.S. military had disclosed plans in December to cut its contingent from 19,000 to about 16,500 this spring, troop levels remain higher. Including troops from other countries, the coalition force on the ground numbers 28,000, Eikenberry said...."

i would like to once again thank the current administration for screwing everything up. last time i checked the taliban were more than just indirectly responsible for 9/11. the war on terror became the war in iraq and everyone just kind of forgot about afghanistan.

bravo neocons bravo

Why does this general hate the US????

And to think, we took special forces away from Afghanistan in 2002 to prepare for Iraq 2 - The wrath of King George.

King george unleashed his wrath on the people of the USA.. we will feel the negative effects of his actions for many many many years

I posted a thread a month or so ago about how we've let Afghanistan down and the need to refocus efforts in that region and the usual suspects told me stop my pathetic whining.
Having read lots about the current situation, this general's comments come as no surprise.

I am startled by how poor a job we've done in Afghanistan since the initial successes (and those were mainly due to the CIA not the Pentagon).

I seriously question the competence of the suits in the DoD.

I was listening to an interview with an SE Asia AQ exert and he was saying the world doesn't trust us in Iraq in part to failing in Afghanistan. They think we basically gave up to start the Iraq war. So our one success in the "war" on terror is now being counted as a failure.

Reason being is we disarmed the Northern Allaince at the request of Karzi./Afghan govt which is still heavily infiltarted with Taliban. NA know how to fight Isamic Fundis but we won't let them.

..and that's in addition to granting Osama's wish of being able to draw America into invading a poor Muslim country. Can't expect great news when you follow the enemy's agenda.

Wars begun and run by politicians are doomed for failure, pity those in charge don't remember the last time we tried it. 🙁

By screwing around with them for a few years now, instead of decisively defeating them, the US has allowed them to regroup, stronger, faster, smarter, and more resolved.

Instead of turning away from Afghanistan and moving to Iraq, the Taliban should have been eliminated by striking in Pakistan. Incentives to Musharraf could have secured permission. And who cares about a coup against him, the US has successfully propped up dictators in worse situations.

Yep, we're winning the War on Terror alright

7-17-2006 Taliban takes control of 2 towns

KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan officials said Monday that Taliban forces have taken over two towns in the southern part of the country.

Scores of Taliban fighters on Sunday entered the southern Helmand town of Garmser, bordering Pakistan, and surrounded a police compound, forcing a small security force to flee and then taking control of the area, a local government official said.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to policy, said Taliban forces were now "moving freely" around the town and the district of the same name.

wow, people please...,did you expect them to just sit tight and hide Osama from us, they are training patiently....so that you know Afganistan was never conquired by anyone, these people will fight and harvest opiates until you let them be or kill them all, but you really can't exterminate those guerillas as those mountain regions can hide a million of those islamic extremists, so unless you are prepared to level the terrain with bombs, there's no way...and if the destroy Taliban, new group will take their place and there's plenty of weapons and munition flowing through the region to last a lifetime

Well said, although it is also a matter of influence. The Taliban may be growing more sophisticated and centralized in terms of leadership, but they are still very much constrained to strategically insignificant mountainous terrain along the Pakistan/Afghanistan border. An enemy is only as powerful as its ability to project its forces and influence...constrained to very remote regions somewhat diminishes any impact the Taliban can have on the rest of Afghanistan...and over the past two years, the Taliban have been driven back into the mountains every time they attempt to launch an offensive.
