I'm doing a research paper about US foreign policy and i just wanted to see if you guys shared my view

I think that the US should take a less aggressive policy towards other nations. Basically, i think America should care less.

Now, please don't go on and on about hating bush and how iraq war was an invasion. cause i don't care. :disgust:
I'm talking about US foreign policy in general.

"not about Iraq" Good luck with that here.

I think we need to stop being the go to Nation when other places need help or have problems. The problem with that is that we are damned if we do and damned if we don't. We stop getting involved and they call us selfish, we help and they call us meddlers. I choose to err on helping rather than not helping.

well i guess your right so guess i won't be getting any thoughtful info (other than yours ofcourse) out of this

damn, hoping i wouldn't have to do so much actual research:frown:

Isn't it possible to "help" without pissing everyone off? Obviously someone is always going to get his panties in a bunch whatever we do, but our foreign policy lately has made it quicker to count our friends than our enemies. We're always going to make enemies however we help, but it seems like we could do it in a way so we had friends too.

The rest of the world treats us as a Damm if you do, and Damm if you don't.

Isolationist did not work (see WWII).
Proactive did not work (See 1960 onward).

Notice how when calamities strike, every one thinks that the US should be helping ("we are the rich nation" and should bend over to help).

However when their hand is no longer out, we are the big bully on the block and the perfect target to point the blame at.

Such countries/populations have very short term memories; even if they asked for help yesterday.

In general, I wouldn't say we should be interventionalist OR isolationist. We should do whatever we decide is in our national interest, especially securitywise and economically, although those two are often intertwined.

Every situation is contextual and should be analyzed thoroughly and reasonably.

I think we should stop buying friends with candy bars (Foreign aid for the very slow). We have been doing that at least since WWII and it never has been good in the long run. We send lots, the big dogs split it and the people starve. Not a good way to make friends in the sixth grade and not a good way to make friends in the world.

I don't think it would be a good idea for the US to reduce their international activities, but I would balance the measures by doing them a bit. The US military costs as much as the 14 second-biggest militaries of this world together. But it's time to end the misconception that the US has its pockets full of "candy bars" because development aid isn't exactly a priority in US foreign policies (speaking of % of GNI, only Italy spends less. The other 20 developed countries donate up to 5 times more). I'd bring human rights and American values in the foreground again. An example for good foreign policy was the reaction against Uzbekistan after the Andischan massacre or the support for the Ukrainian opposition. Improvable are some of the trade relationships, the steel protectionism for example was a policy which cost the US ressources for the benefit of only few persons, or Guantanamo, which should immediately be closed - it's labeled a domestic issue by the US government but it has a big impact on the image of the US nonetheless.
