US Department of Transportation is smoking crack

Biggest WTF moment of my life, perhaps. I had received notice of a certified letter the other day, but I didn't go get it immediately. My mother had received one from the GOP as of late, and since we've both been donors in the past I just assumed it was a letter from the GOP. Wrong.

I received a letter from the NHTSA that stated I -- or my company -- was not in compliance with the TREAD Act (Transportation Recall Enhancement, Accountability, and Documentation Act). Apparently -- unbeknowst to me -- I was manufacturing over 500 cars a year and not giving the government recall data or results of my crash tests. I was ordered to cease and desist immediately.

Quoted from the letter: "Failure to comply with the TREAD Act will expose you to monetary penalties and other enforcement."

This was addressed to my correct name AND address. I was told to advise them in writing if I disagreed with their "investigation and findings."

I called and talked to some loon who promised to investigate and try to get things fixed. How fvcking absurd is this? No wonder we can't get Bin Laden. They can't even realize that a 23 year old college student is not a major car manufacturer. Idiots.

Listen dude, stop breaking the law. You can't complain if you're engaging in illegal activities.

And stop producing hundreds of cars from scratch in your free time.

Did you put your name and fake company down for a freebie or something? What was the company's name? Did it ring any bells?

No company name was listed. Just my real name. It is about an 8 page letter listing what I am doing wrong and how to "fix" the problems.

I would like to place an order for one dozen automobiles from your fine compny. Please send me the bill. I will send you a sertified cashiers check for the amount plus extra so my escrow company will be able to ship the automobiles to me in Nigeria.

Did you import your car? That might have something to do with the confusion.

My car came from Europe, yes, but it was imported by the manufacturer. I simply drove it while abroad.

I, too, think that might have something to do with it, although I can't fathom how. They are alleging that I MAKE cars and the TREAD Act doesn't seem to have anything to do with importation.

You should take this ball and run with it. Reply with a letter demonstrating how you have begun compliance as directed. Include pictures.

Fix the problems.

So what is the mpg of your cars?

Write a letter back to them saying that you've been trying to do this but none of your crash test employees have actually managed to survive yet.
