What are the alternatives? running away would stop the american deaths, but would cause a civil war in iraq and a huge humiliation for the US. Using saddam-like tactics would probably anger the iraqis rather than make them want to submit and would mean the US would have to torture and kill lots of people.

So the only thing you can do is stay the course, accept the deaths and make sure there's no more wars like this in the future.

We are not going to win the hearts and minds of the iraqi people. They do not want us there. There are no "weapons of mass destruction".

American soldiers are dying for what? All of those post-war contracts to rebuild iraq? to save face (can't be humiliated twice by Sadaam now can we)? to spare iraq from a civil war? to spare ourselves from the humiliation of "defeat" by (another) third-world country?

None of the above are worth another American life IMHO.

This has gone on long enough for goodness sakes.

12 more months of this crap.....

Its time we go to the UN, come out and admit that we made some mistakes, and see what kind of help we can get. Its time to put our dicks away and learn to compromise, because what we are doing isn't working.

The sad truth is that there is nothing anyone can do. This was made clear when the UN was attacked in Iraq. No one wants any part of this rat trap, and even if they did, what could be done? Make the Iraqis accept those they reject?

No, there is no good way out. I want to be wrong, but unfortunately this is going just as I feared since before the war.

What is more important for the US? A peaceful, secure, and selfsustaining Iraq? Or the 'spoils of war' (whatever that may be)? Other countries have said that they would supply much needed troops if we would loosen our grip on Iraq and hand over the reins. We've refused. Obviously, our 'interests' are more important than the well-being of the Iraqis. I've seen this argument here..."We did all the hard work, why should we give up control?" Well, if that's what the US is thinking, then it's a little hard to believe that we hold the Iraqis interest as our #1 priority over there.

The attack on the UN hq was a revenge attack by Saddam/Ba'athist loyalist, and so were the attacks on the Jordanian embassy and the Red Cross. Every who screwed over Iraq by standing aside and letting bush and company steam roll into the country is going to get theirs.
The US believed its own hype about Saddam being hated and them being welcomed and got cocky and are now paying the price. More people prefer Saddam over bush and news like this is just going to become more and more common until the US is run out and Saddam and the Ba'athist regime is restored to power.
By restoring Saddam, apologizing and repairing damages is the ONLY way the US is going to get out of this.

If bush did just that, there wouldn't have been an invasion of Iraq.

I agree that we should ask UN for much more involvement. We should hand the civil and political process to UN and only command the US arm forces in Iraq.

UN should get a Iraqi government up and running as soon as possible, and everyone get out of there after that.

But that's not gonna happen, you know why? With a UN transition government, US forces won't be able to freely go into Iraqi's home or arrest someone on the street just because they maybe a Saddam loyalist or terrorist. US company won't be able to get the uncontested bids of all big projects going on in Iraq. The worst thing is, Bush admin won't get the credit for rebuilding Iraq.

You see, this is all big political game Bush Admin is playing. They want the money for their big donors and the credit for catching Saddam and rebuilding Iraq so that when comes election time they got something to say about their accomplishment. Too bad that the American soldier have to pay the price with their life, Iraqi people have to pay the price with their life and freedom, and we the American tax payer have to pay the price with our money.

Nobody has been able to finger exactly who or what group is activly conducting these hits.

But one thing is extremely clear - it is a political message that you will be hit as well -
if you show support for the U.S. effort and assist them.

They are also making the statement that no group which has shown support is safe from attack.
by an underground clandestine milita group that is blended into the civilian populous.

Iraqi Terrorists or Iraq Liberation Movement ? depends on your culture and perspective.

Have you noticed how cleverly we have tried to snuff the people who were thier leaders ?
That way there is nobody to surrender to the US officials if they are all dead.
In a truce and with drawal we would have to turn control back to a representative government with consessions -
like was done with Japan and Europe at the treaties that ended WWII, Korea, 'Nam, etc. - nobody this time.

Might as well rename the country Outer Iran then. Iraqis fought for years to stop the Islamic revolution from taking over their country and spreading westward but the US won the war for the Islamic revolutionist and did what the mullahs ayatollas couldn't, end secular rule in Iraq. How nice of the US to help their real enemy. That is what would happen if the Shi'ites are put in power and that will NEVER happen, even bush isn't that stupid.

So you are suggesting that we make a deal with the Baath party to bring them back in power as long as they work with us in the future instead of Against us? Something like we did with the Shah in Iran?

Ok, raise your hand if you think the guy accusing someone of being a spineless coward is actually someone who made a new account to spout off.

What's the definition of 'irony' again?

Red:

Bush won't do that. And Bush would walk out of Iraq before he goes hat in hand to the U.N. A more likely scenario, if Bush doesn't get his act together, is for the next President in January 2005 to go to the U.N. hat in hand. Bush is squandering his lead in the second half of the ball game. Also, putting the RumTum Tiger on all the talk shows like he did today is guaranteed to pull Bush's numbers down in double-digit waves. Bush needs to transition out Rummy, Wolfowitz, Powell, and Rice and get some compassionate conservatives in there before its too late. I hate saying that about Powell who I thought at one time might be a good President, but he's turned out to be completely without balls.... Very sad....
